Page or File Restore - Warning Message

    Question

  • Hi,

When testing out file or page level restores, I get the
    following message:

The roll forward start point is now at log sequence
number (LSN) 17000000031000001. Additional roll forward
past LSN 17000000031800001 is required to complete the
    restore sequence.

I've been restoring the full backup, and then the latest
tail backup - so I'm not sure why I'm still getting this
    message?

    Best Regards,

    Joe

  • Hi -

Page level restore is supported in full recovery mode and works for bulk-logged

recovery mode with some limitations (see BOL; Bulk-Logged Recovery Model and Page Restore)

I assume that you run full recovery mode.

You have to have unbroken chain of transaction logs from the last backup

You need to start with full backup (or filegroup backup ) that contains your page.

Next you apply a differential backup (if you have it)

Finally apply the log backup; all logs from the last backup (full or differentia; see an example in BOL under Performing Page Restore)

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the response.  Yes - I have restored from a full backup (norecovery) and then an unbroken chain of tran log restores (recovery on the final one).  I still get that warning error - which seems like a bug.

    Ideas?

  • Hi -
Did you backup the log after you started page level restore ?
IF not, can you do it and apply this log to the restore chain?
    Thanks

  • Nice work Mirek,

I backed up the log after the initial file backup, but not after the RESTORE with NORECOVERY.  When I did the tran log backup after the RESTORE of the file or page, then applied the tran log backup, all was well.

    Thanks much!

  • I am glad to hear it. I will double-check on our end that we clearly document this step
    Thanks
