Data Mining in Education

  • Hello, please help figure out how can use the Data Mining methods for analysis of test results of several student groups on any subject, or analyze the results after the session for all subjects. To do this, do not seem to need a Data Mining, database is not large, the results are not very many, we can easily obtain various statistics and graphs. But the problem is how to use methods Data Mining for this field? What method and how can use for analysis results of exams?

  • I think the easiest way to start is to use Data Mining add-ins for Excel. Excel is very good for importing, editing data and displaying results.

    If you have SQL Server Analysis Services, you can use Microsoft add-ins http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=896A493A-2502-4795-94AE-E00632BA6DE7&displaylang=en (these work with Office 2007)

  • Execoma, if you want simple reports, averages, do not use data mining.

    If you wanna do a deep research about the reasons of the scores and you have a lot of information, use Data Mining

    For Data Mining you first need to define a goal (prediction field), this field is what you want to maximize (in your scenario, the scores).

    Then you will offer the input data (information about the students). You will include in the datamining information about the teachers, students and the subject.

    Then you can use for example Clustering (one common method of Data Mining). Data Mining will show you some interesting things about the class and the scores. Some not intuitive information.

    For example, if you include information like: the parents are divorced (y/n), the parents went to the univertisity (y/n) or if you analyze your current information compared with the results of the last year, analysis services will show you groups of students with specific characteristics.

    Data Mining could be used when you have a lot of information (lets say a lot of info about students) and you want find some paterns of the guys with low scores (or high scores).
