Having trouble moving SQL Express 2008 database from one server to another

    Question

  • We are trying to move a SQL 2008 Express database from one machine to another. We used the management studio on the source machine to create a .bak file of the database and have placed it on the new machine. We have SQL Express installed on the new machine. We have tried to download SQL Express Management Studio to the new machine and can't find where to do that. Each time we download, what is called "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express"

from the Microsoft site, it goes through the motions and installs SQL Server and opens up to a program that calls itself SQL Server Installation Center and doesn't have the tools to import a backup file.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • You just need installing SQL Server Express edition with same or above version. Then open SSMS, connect to SQL instance and restore your database backup.

  • Saeid-Those are the steps we think we are taking.

Visakh16-That is the site that we downloaded the Mngmt Studio from

    Shanky-That is the site also.

Each time we download the 2008 SQL Express Management Studio, we end up with a screen calling itself "SQL Server Installation Center" which doesn't have backup restore or import functions that we see unless we are not taking the correct approach

Thanks for your comments. Any further ideas will be appreciated.

  • I think the SQL Server Express is not installed correctly or not installed at all, so :

    1. Unistall SQL Server Express if it is already installed.

    2. Download and run Regcleaner (http://regcleaner.en.softonic.com/), to clean your machine from SQL Server, remove all SQL Server keys registred and files...

    3. Download the complete installation of SQL Server 2008 Express R2 (http://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/download/details.aspx?id=30438), and install it.

  • The trouble turns out was that the Management Studio download file acts like you are installing the entire new SQL server. You need to go through the steps as if you are trying to install a new server but you will only have the option of installing the tools. If you walk through it there are selections that only include the tools install.

Thank you all for your help
