    The error essentially means that there are some orphan entries in registry and also permissions issue.

    You can inherit the permission from Components key. SYSTEM and Administrators should have full control.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components

    You can also run procmon tool to check the registry key which needs permission.

  • Please check the Setup Log files located at %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\. You may find this article useful in analyzing those files.
