  • A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed.
To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component.
Action ended 14:49:54: ErrorUnsupportedUpgrade. Return value 3.
Action ended 14:49:54: INSTALL. Return value 3.

From the output i can see that you are trying to upgrade your SQL Instnance and unfortunately you've selected the features\tools which are already there.

I think sql engine is already installed. in case you want to install something else Try it one more time and this time select something which is not there

  • Hello,

It seems SQL Server 2005 Tools are already installed on that computer. Make sure all components needed on this instance are already installed by opening SQL Server 2005 Configuration Manager. You don’t have to install SQL Server again if you see them installed.

My suggestion is to install SP4 for SQL Server 2005 now, since RTM version is not compatible with Windows 7. Apply SP3 or SP4 to make SQL Server 2005 compatible and be able to use it.

    Hope this helps.

  • Dear Alberto,

I had unistalled sql 2005 couple of times including deleted from the registry.

Even when it finds the component already installed, see below return value 3.

I do not want to re-install windows 7 to bypass this error.

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Hi,

I deleted instances from the registry.

I have already installed SP4 (includes SP3 also) and SP3.

When I re-install sql 2005, Now it says fatal error occured, windows exception, exiting and it stops.

  • Dear All,

    We still have issues while trying to re-install sql 2005;

    1. there is a problem in the installation refer to sql 2005 service pack2.

    2. this program has detected a fatal error and check windows.

For few others when we connect to the database engine by browsing the server engine, trying to logon via windows logon, it says user could not be authenticated.

To resolve all of this we have been repeatedly uninstalling and re-installing, which does not solve the problem at all.
