Installing SQL 2005 in Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

    Question

  • Hi,

I'm trying to install SQL 2005 Enterprise 32-bit on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  I get a message 'This program has known compatibility issues.....you must apply SQL server 2005 SP3 before you run SQL Server...'

Later on (in System Configuration Check), I get 3 warnings:

1- SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)

Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.

    2- IIS Feature Requirement (Warning)

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features.  Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.

3- ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement (Warning)

Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

    --------------

Then, when I'm at the 'Components ton install' screen, all checkbox are greyed out (and unchecked) apart from 'Workstation components'

Any idea on what needs to be done?

    Thanks.

  • If you absolutely need the features of Enterprise Edition on your windows 7 machine (for development purposes), I would recommend installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition 32-bit instead.

Developer Edition contains all the features that Enterprise Edition has, but can be installed on a client OS.

  • Hi Eric,

SQL Server Enterprise Edition is not supported on client operating systems such as Windows Vista, Windows 7, which is only support for server operating systems such as Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008.

In the previous releases of SQL Server such as SQL Server 2005 or earlier version, the setup of Enterprise Editions will be blocked on the client operating systems. However, this behavior is changed since SQL Server 2008 release, the setup of Enterprise Editions will be not blocked on client operating systems. For example, you can install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition on Windows 7. But it is still not a supported configuration, we recommend installing Develop Edition which has identical functionalities as Enterprise Edition.

    Thanks,
    Chunsong

  • Eric,

I agree with David. Server Edition SKU’s like Enterprise Edition are NOT supported nor will install cleanly on a desktop OS like Windows 7. It may work on some OS like vista, but I couldn’t get them to work on Windows 7. Even then I wouldn’t recommend as it’s NOT supported in anyway.

Consider to use Developer Edition instead.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Ed on my Dell with Win7, and it works perfectly.

But I'm not able to run the same on my other machine i.e. Sony VAIO with Win 7, though it is installed perfectly.

    Please help.

  • I am planning to purchase HP Pavilion DV6 61xx 64 bit with Windows 7 Basic and need to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

Is it supported in Windows 7, both Basic and Premium?
