second instance of sql server 2008 R2

    Question

  • Is it possible to add second instance of sql server 2008 R2 using control panel, uninstall or change a program?

I'm new to sql server and still looking for install cd.  Also, I printed out install steps with screenshot, is that enough info to install and what are configurations that i need to update upon install.  This is just testing instance for application upgrade in dev so no load issue or anothing like that.

    Thanks

  • I need to give name like alexsqlserver or something like that to identify?

and that name should be used in application configuration?

    Hello Alex,

Yes, indeed. Use a name you prefer and in the application settings you have to use it in the manner of:

    MachineName\InstanceName

So e.g. your machine name is "AlexServer" and you use the instance name "AlexSqlServer" then you have to use

    AlexServer\AlexSqlServer

as server name to connect to that new instance.

  • Hello,

Yes, its possible to add a second instance, exactly you can install up to 50 instances on one machine.

But you have to use the SQL Server installer from the installation media (e.g. DVD) and have to install it as a "named instance"; the instance name have to be unique on a machine.

and that name should be used in application configuration?

    Thanks

  • I'm not sure you want this, but a temporary solution is the free evaluation edition.
