SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 installation problem

    Question

  • I am using Windows 7.

Today I saw "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369)" as an optional update in the updates list. I've tried to intstall it but it failed with Code CF2E222F. I found nothing about this code on the internet.

I've also tried to install the sp manually. I've downloaded it an tried to install. But it also failed.

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: C:\Windows\Installer\9bcac.msi.

    Any suggestions?

  • Look at the link How to: View and Read SQL Server Setup Log Files

Copy / paste all errors from folder %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\summary.txt

  • I think it is looking for the file C:\Windows\Installer\9bcac.msi which does not exists.

I've searched that file on the internet but no results. I've also looked for it in the sql 2008 disc, but could not find.

  • Hi,

According to the error message, the SQL Server 2008 SP1 setup can’t find cached MSI file which is for sql_engine_core_inst.msi (sqlrun_sql.msi in SQL Server 2005) the main installation (RTM) of an instance of SQL Server Database Engine. During the installation of SQL Server 2008 RTM, the <SQL Server 2008 Root Folder>\<X86>\Setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_core_inst.msi is cached to %windir%\Installer folder for future use such as service pack.

So as to resolve this problem, please copy sql_engine_core_inst.msi from <SQL Server 2008 Root Folder>\<X86>\Setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_core_inst.msi to C:\Windows\Installer and rename it to 9bcac.msi. Now, you should be able to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack.

The following articles talk about the similar setup problems for SQL Server 2005:

    Thanks,
    Chunsong

  • Hi All,

I went through to install SQL Server 2008 last night, this is for a x64 Bit Server 2008 R2 and i found the problem.

It was just the .net framework setup file in the redist folder under x64.

I downloaded a new file and replaced the file and the name to what the old setup file was.

you will have to extract the iso and add this file in and repackage the iso. Then i used magic disk to mount this iso and ran the setup from there.

It all setup completely fine and i am using it now.

    Hope this helps.
