Upgrading from SQL 2008 to 2008 R2

    Question

  • For an existing SQL 2008 Enterprise Edition (active/passsive mode) which has SQL and SSIS on the cluster nodes and SSRS installed on two other web servers. What is technically required to upgrade the all the SQL Services or just the SSRS components to 2008 R2?

Also if it is replacing a SQL 2008 with SQL 2008 R2 is it covered by the same licensing?

  • You can refer: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144267.aspx [How to: Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 (Setup)].. This has a detailed instructions for version upgrade..

Also, if you are really concerned about SSRS and SSIS... Refer the specific Instructions for SSRS  :http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb522792.aspx

Basically SSIS and SSRS are not cluster aware. SSRS can be on a web farm...

  • To do a complete upgrade to SQL 2008 R2, you need to run a inplace upgrade on EACH of the web servers for the SSRS portion. You would then also need to run the upgrade on the SQL Server booxes and if I remember, when you run the upgrade on one server it upgrades both halves BUT since SSIS is not cluster aware nor are the SSMS tools you need to run the upgrade on each half untill all services are at the correct patch level.

Licensing for this case is in fact that you would need a total of 4 / 8  if you doing per processor.... point being...you must licenses each box on it's own. One for each half of the cluster and one each for the web servers.
