Problem installing SQL Server 2012 SP1: "managed sql server installer has stopped working"

    Question

  • Hello,

    I have a big problem.

I just downloaded SQL Server 2012 SP1 and I only want to install SSMS. The installer always crashes with an error message "managed sql server installer has stopped working".

I already tried all solutions from Google for this problem but nothing works.

    Can someone help me plase?

My System: Window 8 Pro with Visual Studio 2012.

    Thanks

    Sven

  • Hello,

That log file does not help us.

It seems the installer does not have SP1 included.

Could you try to download the file media again, and retry installation with the new media.
To be able to install SQL Server 2012 Express, you need to enable .NET Framework 3.5 using Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn on or off features.  Install or enable PowerShell 2.0 also.

    Hope this help.

  • Hi Alberto,

thanks for your reply. I've just downloaded SSMS standalone from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062 (ENU\x64\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe) and will see if it works.

  • Hello,

If the tools repaired something then the .NET framework was the issue. Try to uninstall .NET framework 4.0 and reinstall it. Try to turn off  the .NET Framework 3.5 features using Control Panel and then enable it again. Do not enable the Windows Communication Foundation when you enable .NET 3.5 again.

    Hope this help.

  • Would you please try decompressing express package to local folder then launch setup from command line ( open command line in elevated mode)

to de-compress express package run from commandline

    <package.exe> /X

To run setup from command line

    Setup.exe /Action=Install

One thing else express sku doesn't include SSMS you need either express advanced or express with tools.

  • Hi Ahmed,

Thanks for your reply. I only try local Installation of the package - no Network installation here. The Problem still exists. The installer always crashes.

    I've downloaded SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe stand-alone.

Yesterday I tried to install SQL Server Management Studio 2008 but the Installer also crashes with a .NET Error Dialog stating that the System, Version=4.0.0.0 assembly is missing. But I'm running Windows 8, .NET 4 is included in the OS. This is very strange...

I found in Windows EventLog the following entries (sorry but my System is German):

Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: ScenarioEngine.exe, Version: 11.0.2100.60, Zeitstempel: 0x4f35e1de

Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: ClusApi.dll, Version: 6.2.9200.16384, Zeitstempel: 0x5010960c

    Ausnahmecode: 0xc000001d

    Fehleroffset: 0x0000000000040000

    ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x1db8

    Startzeit der fehlerhaften Anwendung: 0x01cdff8fbad708e3

Pfad der fehlerhaften Anwendung: D:\Downloads\SSMS 2012\x64\ScenarioEngine.exe

    Pfad des fehlerhaften Moduls: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ClusApi.dll

    Berichtskennung: fd94a509-6b82-11e2-beb6-00059a3c7800

    Vollständiger Name des fehlerhaften Pakets:

Anwendungs-ID, die relativ zum fehlerhaften Paket ist:

Obviously there is something wrong in my System regarding ClusApi.dll

  • Guys,

    I have similar problems:

SQL2012 SP1 installation complete, but after that I keep getting "SQL Installation has stopped working"

when I re-try to install SQL features. It may not sound like error but driving me crazy.

I am setting up SCCM 2012 SP1 + SQL 2012 SP1+ Server 2012  lab, and trying to configure SCCM 2012 configuration manage Reporting Site Role" and I just can not get the reporting to work due to this corruption...

Any lead will be much appreciated.

And yes, I have ripped the entire lab like 3 times, and have download the iso for SQL 2012 sp1, and sccm 2012 like 3 times..

    please help

  • I've been fighting this for 3 days on 3 complete rebuilds from scratch and hours and hours wasted, my problem:
Can't install SQL 2012SP1 on 3 different fresh Server 2012 installs
Managed SQL Server Installer has stopped working
        scenarioengine.exe
        stackhash_745a

    Ends up being solved by
copying the entire SQL CD install to my desktop and installing it from there

I'm ticked. Simple things should be this hard.
    What a waste.
