Target Server Memory vs. Total Server Memory

    Question

  • I have SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition 64 bit running on Windows 2003 Server 64bit
with 12GB memory under VM ESX host server (with VM server has reserver 70% memory of 12GB)

From time to time I check if there are some bottleneck e.g. Memory.

Tried running perfmon and using the following performance counter (Target Server Memory vs. Total Server Memory)

I found it the values are always the same. As I understand it should be Target less than Total, which I belived a memory issue?

When I run Data Collection report Server Activity the System Memory is 12GB and SQL Server 10GB (always).

How would I know if the system is lacking some memory...?
