  • Please provide the exact error message that you recieved. What other components did you uninstall? You can check the setup error logs to see if they provide more detailed information about the uninstall failure, you can find them at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log, in particular look for Summary.txt to get the top level view.

  • We're going to need more detailed information that is available in the setup logs in the directory I mentioned earlier. Please take a look at those logs to determine what the source of the failure might be.

  • hi Mike

    at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log

Summary.txt dont have any information about uninstall errors.

Summary.txt has informations about the instalation only.

    thanks, and waiting

  • Could you check in the specific timestamp directory that coincides with your attemt to uninstall to see what log files are located there? (The BOL topic http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702.aspx explains the directory naming and log files.) If there is no timestamp directory for the uninstall action, then check you Temp directory for a file name SqlSetup.log, which is the initial log created even before the setup engine launches if something is preventing it from launching.

If neither of these give results I'm going to move this thread to the setup forum for some more expert advice.

    i'm looking to    \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log

the time-stamped log folder names existing there refers to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express instalation date.

    ex: 20080830_154206 ; 20080829_180840 ; 20080830_154240 ; etc.

all folders reflecting the instalation date ( 29 and 30 Aug 2008 ).

On 12 Sep 2008 I tried uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express, but any existing folder reflects this date,

according rules i would have folders like 20080912_103222 but didnt have any.

Loking at all Temp folders on my machine:

nothing about Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express uninstalation attempt.

but i have logs about folowing remotions made via Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs:

    Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Policies

    SQL Server 2008 Native Client

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Browser

all above was removed, but i cant remove Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express.

    what to do now ?

  • Sant Ana

When I tried to repair it , It seeks to know the location of installation.

It is not able to pick the default location of installation and when I

select the default location it is not accepting that location and keeps

giving the message it is not the location where SQL Express R2 is installed.

  • All other visible components of SQL Server 2008 removed successfully, except Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup (english).  I'm not sure if I accidentally downloaded and attempted to install a Full version of SQL Server on my Windows 7 Ultimate system -- or if it was SQL Server Express 2008 R2.

Don't want to have to go to the registry.  I'm looking through my backups to find the original install download, but of course I don't know which one to use if I find it.  NOTE that the download filenames frequently do not distinguish between Full SS and Express SS; I wasn't smart enough to make that explicit change in the filename.
