Polish and English MDS Users

    Frage

  • I have an MDS project where most of my users are English but a good portion are Polish.  Would the Polish MDS Excel Plug-in work with the English MDS Server?  It seems to me the answer would be no since none of the metadata is defined for Polish.  Are there any white papers, case studies, or best practices for deploying MDS in a multi-lingual deployment scenario.  As an FYI, my models and entities have attributes for the polish folks ie(English_Product_Name, Polish_Product_Name, etc).  Need some guidance!  I don't want to go down the path of having to support multiple server installs of different MDS servers for each language as the pilot will support polish but future iterations will have other languages added.

  • I'm intrigued but can't wrap my head around how the polish install would understand the English model metadata. I may not have been clear, but the product master is one version of the truth for all employees regardless of localization. The English users need to see new products added by polish employees and then provide the English attribute updates or visaversa for the polish employees. Make sense?

  • Hi Chad,

Please take a look at the following article:

  • Based on that documentation link, I would have to install MDS twice and setup my Product Model for each install and then setup some sort of data integration job to keep  both models in sync since both the English and Polish users will be adding products and modifying product attributes.  I don't see how this would work well in a mixed language environment without doing something like that.  Am I missing something?   Alternatively we were thinking to just install the English version and build an ASP.Net app for the Polish users using the MDS web services since the Polish employees will be doing less than 20% of the knowledge work.  This assumes our English model has polish attributes for every English product attribute.  In addition, we need an entity to provide the polish names for all the English named entities.  This seems clunky but I think its less costly than trying to keep two MDS models in sync with each other and not have data integrity issues.  Please correct me if I'm making some bad assumptions.

  • Hi Chad,

Have you tried to install MDS choosing Polish as the language but do not create a new model, just connect the web application to the existing model. After you have done this you might need to repair the database. Basically, you want 2 MDS installs -  English and Polish - pointing to the same model; if this works the database should contain 2 data tables per entity -  e.g. tbl_2_10_EN and tbl_2_10_PL -  a table for English data and a table for Polish data.

A word of caution: I would only try this on a test environment built just to test this. In other words, I would not try this in production and QA environments until I 100% it does what is intended.

    Kind regards,

    M
