Can't update, install or uninstall Silverlight

  • Files download but install fails.  Same failure when I try to uninstall existing Silverlight.

Windows Installer: The file 'C:\abccdb42ee8ef34479725e3a\silverlight.msi' is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft SIlverlight.  Try to find the instalation package 'silverlight.msi' in a folder from which you can install Microsoft Silverlight.

WinXP SP3 - Can't uninstall from Add/Remove, can't update with new download from - stuck with this program that's outdated and a security risk.

There was a fix but MS recently yanked the uninstall utility.  One would think that a widely reported problem like this would get some attention from Microsoft.

  • I totally agree. I have the same problem: no way to uninstal the old version 2 and no possible instalation of updates. So no posibility of  browsing the sites with silverlight. Isn't any one at microsoft  able to publish the resolution of this problem?

  • I'm having the same issue as you.  Can't figure it out any fresh ideas?

Edit: I did get it fixed.  I downloaded a version of the Install Cleanup Utility and was able to delete Silverlight and reinstall it.

Thanks. Tried that. That just says that Silverlight is already installed.

  • I am on Windows 7 and the update Ireceived returns a dialog box stating "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.        Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'silverlight.msi' in the box below." The box contains "c:\33bd76a69219caaaa8847ced\" (without the quotes). When I tried following another path and uninstall the current version (4.0.50826.0) I get the same prompt. The previous version was installed via a "run" and not a "save as" selection so the previous file is not available. Any ETA on solving this?

  • I am having the same problem on Windows Vista.  I try to uninstall and it says

"The installation source for this product is not available.  Verify the source exists and that you can access it"

It will not let me manually install Silverlight either.  My Windows shutdown button has a installs update on it but it never installs.

This has been going on for days now.  I have tried the link also and it did not work.

  • I solved my problem with Microsoft's help.  I turned in a help ticket on Friday stating my problem by email to Microsoft Support. There webpage:

Then answered the question with update install problems. Went to next page and chose email.  They emailed me a solution which used the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility which they supplied.  The instructions were clear and it worked with no problems.

  • Does anyone know of an updated fix for this?  I browsed to the Micrsoft site and the installer is no longer there.  It looks like I would need the original install disks (if that would even fix it) short of reloading the OS.  This Netbook did'nt even come with those disks like old days, so I am trapped and frustrated.  Netlix keeps telling me it needs Silverlight to watch movies online or I could care less about this apparent garbage program.  I have spent wayyyyy to many hours trying to fix this, all to no avail

  • This is a solution if you can't install or update the application. When you are trying to install it, the file runs, do nothing and is using about 3MB of memory. It might be because of the errors in partitions or HDD drive is failing.

I just had to remove the letter from the E:/ partition to install the Silverlight. I think it was something wrong with that partition. (Updated: It was. I fixed it with check disk for partition E:/ and now I can install Silverlight with this partition enabled :) ). I hope this solution bellow will help you.

    The solution:

    • Do the disk check with automatic fix enabled on all partitions you have.

  • As jfwagner stated, the answer is to install and run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility (Msizap). I had this problem and once I had the utility "zap" Silverlight, I could install Silverlight. Even though MS pulled the app from its site, you can Google Bing for it easily.

  • Good day,

If you can't uninstall silverlight, best way is to delete all registry keys for the silverlight application,.but take note that registry is the blueprint of your entire OS, so try to open run > registry.exe/regedit > in registry editor window click on computer > press Ctrl + F > type in silverlight > then delete all keys > to to continue on searching silverlight logs after deleting a key press F3 >then delete found key again. then after deleting all registry keys > restart your system > then try to install silverlight Silverlight 4 Runtime.

  • I solved the problem with the trouble shooter:

After a few steps, you are aksed to choose a program you have troubles with from a list. Choose MS silverlight, it will recommend to uninstall. After this troubleshooter has uninstalled the software, run the installfile agian, and that is how it worked for me.

    Good luck!
