Copy / Move list item in SharePoint Designer

    Question

  • Hi,

i'm trying to use SharePoint Designer to copy / Move list item from the root of the document library to a specific folder in the document library.

I don't find how to do it...

It seems that it enables to copy only for the root of another document library!

    is that so??

    thanks

  • I did copy documents from the root folder of document library into folders of the same document library or in a folder of different document library.

You have to go to in All Files menu of site object navigation tool pain (on the left), then select files and right click cut. Starting again from All Files menu select different library/folder and right click to copy items.

  • What i try to do is to set a workflow to move the document to a specific folder (not copy and paste by myself using SharePoint Designer).

The workflow has to move items from the root to a specific folder - based on a metadata value. For example: the document has a metadata of type choice with the options: [internal information / public information].

In case the document metadata value is "internal information" - i want to move it to a sub folder.

    is that possible?

  • Not using the OOTB workflow actions.  And I don't know of any addons - commercial or open source - that include such an action.  You'll have to code your own custom workflow action in Visual Studio.

  • This project has custom activities that allows you to copying/moving list items and files cross site.

    Codeplex project: http://spdactivities.codeplex.com/
    Copy/Move item activity: http://spdactivities.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Copy%20List%20Item%20Extended%20Activity&referringTitle=Home

  • Unfortunately, that project has not yet been updated for SharePoint 2010.  It probably needs only minor tweaks, but I don't think it works as-is.

  • Sounds like a perfect fit for the new Routing Rules processing features-one of which will create folders based on metadata values:
