Connecting sp site http://sharepoint.mysite.com with WSS WebService?

    Question

  • Hi,

    Can I connect my sp site "http://sharepoint.mysite.com (created using STSADM.exe)" with WSS3 WebService like this?

    UserGroup oUserGroup = new UserGroup();
    oUserGroup.Url = "http://sharepoint.mysite.com/_vti_bin/UserGroup.asmx";

    I m having exception when doing anything after setting this url to UserGroup object.

    I think that we can only connect sharepoint sites created through "Sharepoint Central Administration Site" which have host header
    in the format "http://SharepointServer:port/sites/sharepoint1".

    Can anybody confirm it? I need to get sharepoint user roles but can not connect to sp site created through STSADM.exe in the
    above mentioned format using WSS3 web service.

  • Can you navigate the url via the browser? Are you getting an access denied 401 or a file not found 404 error from the browser?

  • "http://sharepoint.mysite.com/" should be registered in the DNS sever, therefore, you can visit the site.
    You can confirm this both with your DNS provider. By "ping
    sharepoint.mysite.com", you will get a 100% lost. However, you can still visit the site using the IP address.

    The host header is registered in the DNS of your AD if the SharePoint and AD are in the same server. Therefore, you can connect to the site with the host header.

    To sum up, you just need to register the "
    sharepoint.mysite.com" in your DNS server.
    Cogito, ergo sum.

  • Hi,

         Thanks Steve and Chengyi for your posts, it worked.

         From my development machine (WSS server itself) i was not able to browse my wss site "http://sharepoint.mysite.com/. So I first made it sure that i m able to browse this wss site from server itself.
    My site was registered in dns and proper host header was added to the container "Web Application" site in IIS.

    I was just not having proper dns entry in my machine's LAN settings.
    Once i put it i was able to browse this site and now i m able to programmatically connect this wss site created through STSADM.

    Now I want to get the "Template" and "Title" of this WSS site. I have used Team Site as the template, n now want to retireve it.
    I have created SPSite object, passing the url of this site, but dont know how to retrieve the Site Template (Team Site, BlankSite, Blg etc).
