I have recently bought a new computer with windows 7 and i installed the latest version of windows live messenger and every so often it freezes and then resumes about 45-60 seconds later, which is rather annoying when chatting to someone.  Is there any solution for this?  I have been searching for over a week now.

    Click the Start Menu

    Type "services.msc"

Click the Services.msc that appeared above

    Search for "SSDP Discovery Service"

Right click it, click on Stop

    Double-click it

Set its startup type to "Disabled"

    Click OK

    Close Services

Restart WLM (check with the Task manager to see if there NO msnmsgr.exe running)

    Be happy

This also fix a problem where WLM would refuse to kill its process...

BUT this seems to affect Teredo and WLM's ability to use UPnP to automatically forward ports, but I have not verified any change for other apps like torrent clients and other programs

No problems for me so far..

    Microsoft REALLY should fix this

Thank Insl8r who, in 2008 (yup, 2008) proposed this solution for the same issue with WLM 8.5

Andre: Thanks!  That worked for me. Hopefully, as you imply above, it didn't "break" anything else...  ;-)

The Messenger fix that you described above and that I tried yesterday didn’t work this morning when I tried to get in. In fact, it worked in reverse; I turned BACK ON the SSDP Discovery service in order to make it work. It seems that, when Messenger freezes, it will begin loading until it gets to somewhere between 38k and 40k of memory consumed and then it doesn’t go any further. As I watch in Task Manager, if it gets above that, it will keep going and finally my list of contacts will appear. Strangely, it appears to my contacts that I am signed in, even though my Messenger has already frozen on the “Starting Up…” page.
