Hi ArmineBell,
As far as I know, Visual Source Safe 2005 can work fine with Visual Studio 2010, you don't need to install any updates.
Please let me know if you have any comments.
Best Regards,
Nancy

You should actually download this update:
http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/KB976375
which addresses some compatibility issues between VS 2010 and VSS 2005 (namely, open from Source Control).

I do not get the option to add a project to VSS, it rather gives me an option to add only to TFS.I can add the projects to VSS from VS 2008 without any problem.
Please advise how to enable the option to add projects to VSS in VS 2010.

i'm in the same boat. Can't find the way to connect VSS 2005 to VS 2010.
Where is this in VS 2010?

I too don't see a way to even get Sourcesafe options in VS 10 - i've installed all the downloads recommended here and still nothing.
A lot of the articles i'm reading are also stating that Team Foundation Basic is availabe as part of the VS 2010 package but I don't see any options to configure it as a replacement.
Is there a simple to follow guide to enable SourceSafe integration into VS 2010?

j_young_80,
If you go to Tools -> Options -> Source Control, you should be able to set a drop down for "Microsoft Visual SourceSafe" or any other provider for that matter. Once you have that chosen, you can go to File -> Open. From that dialog, choose Microsoft Visual SourceSafe on the left hand side. The right will populate with VSS databases from which to choose, and you can browse for a solution file. This will download files from VSS to a working folder on disk and "bind" the solution/projects to that VSS database / project location.
If you already have a project on disk, you can "bind" it by opening the project, and from the menu File -> Source Control, you can Add a project (if it does not yet exist), or use "Change Source Control" to bind it to an already existing VSS project. HTH

it took me an extra minute to notice that the source control option in tools options was hidden and there's a checkbox that says 'show all settings" :)

I followed your procedure as you said: Tools -> Options -> Source Control but I do not get any drop down for VSS, Its only "Team Foundation Server" and "None" under plug in settings.
Do I have to install any plug ins? I am sitting on a client and trying to access project files on a server which has VSS 2005 installed. Well, its clear that updates for VSS 2005 doesn't work on my system since I don't have any kind of VSS installed on my machine to update!
What should I do to be able to access VSS using VS 2010?

Farzan86,
There is no real "client-server" architecture to VSS. You'll need to install VSS 2005 on your development machine, and the VSS 2005 Updates next. Once that is installed, your system should have what it needs to access the VSS database sitting out on the file server.

Check the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SourceCodeControlProvider" and see if SourceSafe is listed there and if the info is correct. If not, try re-registering ssapi.dll.

Chris,
Thanks for the compliment.
If you are like me, you'd rather see a post guiding someone down the path than have one which calls the poster an idiot and tells them to research further.

One VERY important note:
In Premium and Ultimate version the path to change to VSS is through
DEBUG -> OPTIONS AND SETTINGS -> SOURCE CONTROL
and NOT File / Source Control !
you should ALSO go into Tools/ Customize and check the boxes for Source Control and the Source Control Team Foundation so they both show up on the menu.

Within VS 2010, Tools -> Options and Settings -> Source Control still works (at least it does for me w/ VS 2010 Ultimate).
It seems Debug -> Options and Settings brings up the same dialog, but with the Debugging Section selected.

But for me it was the only way to get that selection menu to THEN show up in the Tools Option menu. Am also on Ultimate. No idea why. But the Debug menu gave me a dropdown selection to choose the Source Control method of: None, TFS, VSS (file server) or VSS (Internet) method and then afterwards it showed up on the Tools Options menu the selection showed up.

Tom,
I don't think I've ever seen it, but some people report the Options and Settings dialog has missing data, and there is a check box on the bottom to "Show All Settings". Clicking that will expand all options in the navigation pane.

Go to Tools-->Options-->Source Control-->Plug-in Selection and then select Microsoft Visual SourceSafe in the drop down list.

As far as I know, Visual Source Safe 2005 can work fine with Visual Studio 2010, you don't need to install any updates.
Are you assuming that Visual Source Safe 2005 is already installed on the machine along with Visual Studio 2010?
For example, I have a new machine and the full install of Visual Studio Team Edition 2010 was done.
This is the only edition of Visual Studio on this machine.
But I don't see the plug in for Visual Source Safe under tools options etc.
Based on this thread it seems like you have to have the Visual Source Safe client installed from an earlier edition of Visual Studio (?)
It also appears that there is no place to download (for free) just the Visual Source Safe client...that it has to be acquired from a Visual Studio DVD/CD of a previous version of Visual Studio ( 2008, 2005, etc ).
Please confirm.

You will not see any method in VS 2010 to use VSS at all unless you install the VSS 2005 client onto your system.
You WILL need to buy a license for it if you do not already have a client license to reuse.
No prior versions of Visual Studio has VSS 2005 client included - they too required the VSS 2005 client to be installed in order to check code in and out of VSS.

Thanks, that's what it took to fix.
One other issue is that in VS.2010 and after installing and using VSS, I do not see the menu entry:
File->Source Control->Open From Source Control
This is the way that another developer can edit my existing projects from source control and have them properly/automatically set up on their workstation.
How should another developer open an existing project from Visual SourceSafe in Visuai Studio 2010.

Go to
Tools > Options >
check the box in lower left saying "Show all settings" exit then go back into
Tools > Otions > Source Control
check to see if the Current Source Control Plug-in is set to VSS.
If that is not done you will not see VSS using
File > Source Control > Visual Source Safe show up.
