Desktop app installation inside Metro style app
-
22 decembrie 2011 06:12I know this maybe something not encouraged by Microsoft, but what if our Metro application has a desktop companion need to be installed? Can we, for example, add the desktop installation package as pure resource into the metro app (to pass the certificate) and when the metro app gets running, give the user instructions to find these installation file and do the installation on their desktop if they'd like to? Is this valid or not?

Hi Ciger,
I recommend that you review the Certification Requirements for Windows Apps that are available online. A specific area in the requirements that you should review is the section on how Metro Style Apps should behave. Additionally I will provide the team with feedback that more clarity is needed regarding companion apps.
Thanks,
Dawn

Hi Dawn, thanks for the reply. The metro app itself technically for sure will meet all the metro app requirements. The problem is whether it can contain installation files for a desktop app while still valid to be listed in the app store as a metro app. Thanks.

Hi Cigar,
Thank you for the additional information. I will provide the team with the additional feedback that more clarity is needed on whether a metro style app that are available in the Windows Store can contain installation files for a desktop app.
Thanks!!

Hello Greatwall1,
No, you are not able to install a desktop app from a Metro style app. You may put a placeholder in the Store that directs users to your website for installation but it cannot be included in the app package. Have a look at the App Developer Agreement and in particular, section 2.b Desktop App Submission. This will explain what the expectations are for desktop apps.
Also, have a look at section 7 of the Windows 8 app certification requirements. This section explains the additional requirements of desktop apps for Windows 8. Desktop apps will go through their own certification process. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Jesse

To see how desktop apps will be listed in the App Store, here's an article that shows how Microsoft offers the SkyDrive Desktop app in the App Store: http://www.liveside.net/2012/07/12/new-skydrive-app-appears-in-windows-8-store-offers-win32-app-through-the-store/
