Anyone have any experience configuring Telerik Test Studio without using Lab Management?

Hi I'm working with a company that wants to implement Telerik Test Studio. When I read the documentation it looked obvious to me that we needed to first implement Lab Management so everything would be prepared end-to-end for creating/managing environments in MTM. However some of the company's IT architects believed this wasn't necessary and anyone who has worked on a Lab Management implementation knows that its a tricky process. First you have to get your full SCVMM configuration setup and then you have to install the SCVMM AC on the TFS ATs. In large organizations this is a daunting task because it involves heavy interactions with the SQL Server admins, network admins, issues from the VMWare proponents on "why do we need SCVMM", etc. that become huge political issues. Then once you have SCVMM all up/running smoothly then it's off to the races of getting the SCVMM AC on the ATs configured/working and then getting Lab Management configured at the farm & TPC levels. I'll spare the details on Network Isolation issues but they are many but once it's all properly put together it's well worth the effort :)
Well this company naturally wants to skip Lab Management but get Telerik Test Studio properly working in the enterprise. Now we're trying to create a physical environment by following the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee390842.aspx instructions (without Lab Management). The Test Controller machine was configured to point to our TFS Team Project Collection and shows up in the list of Controllers in the Controllers tab of Lab Center in MTM. However we cannot make a connection to the Test Controller in the Controllers tab of Lab Center in MTM on a client machine running Test Agent.
Anyone have any experience configuring Telerik Test Studio without using Lab Management?

Hi, I work in Telerik Test Studio technical support. I actually have done this myself (setup Test Studio on a Microsoft Test Agent) and successfully run Test Studio tests on it. My setup was pretty simple. I used just two VM's
- VM1: TFS, Visual Studio 2010, Build Agent, Test Controller
- VM2: Visual Studio 2010, Test Studio, Test Agent talking to test controller
I did not run into any problems getting my test agent talking to my test controller, so I don't think I'll be much help with you there. But I might be able to assist once you get past that problem.

Alex:
Are you still having trouble connecting to a test controller. Can you please share a few more details - are these machines domain joined? is the person connecting to the test controller a member of project contributors, or is he a member of one of the test controller windows groups on the test controller machine?
Thanks
