VersionControlMigrationException: Compatibility Error: Successful migration requires a server version of 2005 SP1 or later - AGAIN

Question

I am running a TIP job from a TFS2008 SP1 server to a TFS2010 10.0.40219.1 server. I am using the TIP version 2.2.20314.1. I have run several successful migrations, but I have one job which fails with the "VersionControlMigrationException: Compatibility Error: Successful migration requires a server version of 2005 SP1 or later " error. I strongly suspect that this is a red herring, as I am running both source and target servers much much later versions than 2005, and have already updated my source server to SP1, and installed the compatibility patch on it, all to no avail.

Has anyone anything else to suggest?

Make sure you have  the forward compatibility hotfix for 2010 installed on the machine where you are running the migration. You have to have team explorer for both versions installed to configure it

Most probably the 2005 sp1 is just a bad error. If you don't have those installed, quite possible  it is informing that you might be missing Team Explorer 2008 sp1 or the compatibility patch for team explorer 2010.

As I stated in my OP - I already have the VS2008SP1 installed and the forward compatibility patch. The whole point of this post was that even with those two items installed, I am still getting this error.

Update: I found the problem - the forward compatibility patch had failed to install. The msi had rolled back and the logs had recorded it.

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server - ENU - Update 'KB974558' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\DOCUME~1\LK46\LOCALS~1\Temp\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1-KB974558_20120723_195237111-Msi1.txt.

However, earlier in the log we also had:

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Explorer - ENU - Update 'KB974558' installed successfully.

Both messages were frpom the MsiInstaller.

That explains why the TIP job failed, but why did the patch fail to install?
