Discussion Performance not good enough

First off, let me say that I like the idea of Debugger Canvas a lot.

In some quick tests, however, I found the performance to be insufficient to warrant leaving it installed.  Simple things like clicking in a code bubble other than the current stack frame resulted in a delay of a significant part of a second.  A couple of things that might be contributing factors:

    1. I'm on a 30" monitor with VS maximized, so there's a lot of surface area.
    2. In my quick test, the methods I was stepping through are large - more than a handful of lines.  Large enough that most had scroll bars on their bubbles.

Machine is Windows 2008 R2 x64 SP1 on a 16-core machine with 96Gb of RAM, system and temp files on SSDs.

    Hi Carl,

Thanks for reporting! It is very helpful for us to get feedback on the performance of specific tasks like this. The other two areas that we have some struggles with is performance on start up and when adding a new bubble to the canvas. Were there other tasks that you felt were slow?

    Thanks!

    Jens -

I didn't leave it installed long enough to try much more.  When I have more time, I'll re-install and kick the tires a bit more thoroughly.

    Hi Carl,

Thanks! As an aside, you can very easily turn Debugger Canvas on and off using the Debugger Canvas toolbar button. When the canvas is turned off, there should be no noticeable difference in debugging performance compared to uninstalling.

    Thanks,
