The beta of VS2010 was not compatible with XP MCE2005 because of issues with installation of Ver 4 of the .net framework being blocked ( Fix to unblock it http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2009/05/29/9662563.aspx ) .

    Quote:

Officially, the .NET Framework 4 beta 1 (and therefore VS 2010 beta 1) is not supported on Windows XP Media Center Edition or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.  However, the wording in the readme is a bit vague.  Item 2.1.1.1 in the .NET Framework 4 beta 1 readme says the following:

Note: You cannot install the .NET Framework 4 Beta 1 on operating systems that have the .NET Framework 1.0 built in.

    Has this been changed ?

    Hi people,
I’m not sure about VS2010 Express, so I have to ask if I perhaps misunderstood something, because English is not my native language and those EULA things are very complicated. On http://www.microsoft.com/express/Windows/  it states as follows:

The Visual Studio® 2010 Express is a set of free tools which offers you an exciting experience with the new integrated development environment, a new editor built in Windows® Presentation Foundation (WPF) and support for the new .NET Framework 4.

Note that the word “free” is bolded.

On the right-hand side on the top of the hyperlink to download page it urges:

Start building Windows applications for free today!

On the bottom of the page there’s  “Terms of use” link and there you can find PERSONAL AND NON-COMMERCIAL USE LIMITATION.
Well, not really free as VS2008, but worth to try nevertheless, after all that work MS programmers put into. So I went to download page,  picked up .iso file, and gone to lunch. Later, I started installing VB2010, and of course EULA popped up. Among other, it says:

    MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS
    MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC 2010 EXPRESS
    1. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
    a. Installation and Use. One user may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices to design, develop and test your programs.
    b. Trial Edition.  The initial installation of the software is a trial edition. You may convert your trial rights at any time by obtaining a product key from Microsoft.  The trial software will present conversion options to you thirty (30) days after you install the trial software.  After the expiration of the 30-day trial period, without conversion, the trial software will stop running.

So what does this mean? Am I to pay for VS2010 Express? Why in the world would anyone ask me to torture their server downloading one CD? Why wasn’t I suggested to pick up VS pro trial at the first place? Or I misunderstood something?
To be really honest I will buy VS2010 pro eventually, because I liked what I saw. It’s not about buying; it’s about the money at the moment. I hope to close few things, but not in 30 days. So I need help to choose: am I to start my project with VS2010 (‘cause I’m bit anxious about learning new techs) or be patient, finish it with VS2008 Express and take the money.

I believe that the software you create can be sold or published but you can not modify any of the VBE services or any thing derived from the services . I don't know it is unclear . In past versions you could do what ever you wanted with the software you created . It still has the publish tab on the solution's property page so I assume that is still true . You can get a key by using the register option on the help menu

Okay, this might sound like a stupid question, but I seached the forum and can't find an answer, I also can't find a way to even ask a question, so I thought I would reply to yours and see where it goes.

So can you install VS2010 Express to a network in a school, or can you use the same sertial number in an image and put it on a complete lab of computers?  Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask this, but I can't seem to find anywhere to ask a question.

Well, I kinda found the answer on that question. Eula states:

Which, as I've understood, means that you can freely install any number of copies on any number of your machines, but if you want to use them without trial limitations, you'll have to register it. Its for fre, and there's the option in the every part of VS2010 for doing that. When I obtained my reg keys, they even let me try VS2010 Pro for 90 days, whish is really great. Actually, it would be, if I had a time, but that's not their mistake.

I also found SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (supporting 10G database) for free download. I find that's the ideal combination for developping solutions for really small business. VSExpress does not provide very comfortable way to connect with SQL Server, but it is possible. However, I plan to upgrade to VS pro one day.

I don't know if this is right place for asking this kind of qustion, but nobody's complain, so I think it is. Actually, it would be usefull if I said something wrong, so we could hear from Microsoft their comments.

I think so, if you think you could take some money for a small program.

    Adrian,

Can you give us an idea what you are writting.

Visual Studio 2010 Express is a product for web design.

Visual Studio 2010 Express is nowhere written that it contains something to Create Windows Applications.

    Asked and answered multiple times.

Essentially Yes - but don't take my word for it. Read the stuff that MS supplies including the EULA.

The general rule is that Express editions can be used freely to develop software that you can distribute however you want, but you cannot redistribute the Express edition. If someone wants/needs it they should download it from MS.

ˇI think you can sold it, but do read EULA again. There might be some issues about some controls that were licenced from third parties, not from Microsoft (I mean if any of those controls are present in Express edition).

Also if you generate a document for MSOffice, you should have licenced it, as your client. Of course, you do your application by client's order, so it's up to client to obtain valid licence for MSOffice, if MSOffice's document was in application specification order.

Generally, if your application genterates any data in some licenced formats, you should be covered with licence to use them. You could theoretically generate Excell 2003 xml file without having Exell installed, but you cannot open it so easy. So...

    Hi Adrian.

You said... "All of the Express features are still available via the Tools > Settings > Expert Settings menu."

I cannot find the "Set Next Statement" function.  Was it removed?  if not, How do I enable it?

    Thanks

Maybe people won't be so excited when they accidently REMOVE ALL MENUS and then discover that restarting Visual 2010 gives an empty window with no menus at all, and the only solution is to completely reinstall the product!

In apropriate translation of the EULA. You may produce software for commercial sale, but only AFTER you have registered your copy of VS express. Otherwise the product is for evaluation purposes only. Also. Just as an Aside. The SDK works on VS Express but is not officially supported, and implementations of variants for VS express is prohibited as you do not hold a license for enterprise deployment.

I hope that clears up your questions.
