Error Message 'IISConfigurator.exe has stopped working' when starting the Azure compute emulator
-
segunda-feira, 26 de setembro de 2011 15:04
Hello,
I've just installed the new Windows Azure SDK 1.5 and the Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 1.5 (September 2011) from Web Platform Installer 3.0.
I rebootet my machine (Windows 7 Ultimate x32)and started Visual Studio 2010 SP1 (10.0.40219.1) with administrator privileges.
Then I created a new Windows Azure Project with a WCF Worker Role.
I left all the settings as they are and pressed F5 to start and debug the project.
A Windows pops up "Starting the Window Azure Debugging Environment" saying "Deploying service package to the Windows Azure compute emulator", and immediately followed by an error message "'IISConfigurator.exe has stopped working'.
[Window Title]
IISConfigurator.exe[Main Instruction]
IISConfigurator.exe has stopped working[Content]
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.[Debug] [Close program]
When I hit "Debug" on the error message, I see the following info in the Visual Studio Just-In-Time debugger:
"An unhandled exception ('System.Management.ManagementException') occured in IISConfigurator.exe [4176].
When I look in the The Event Viewer I can find the following entry:

Hi,
Please try to run Legacy HWC Web Role by commenting out Sites element from ServiceDefinition.csdef file like this:
<!--<Sites>
<Site name="Web">
<Bindings>
<Binding name="Endpoint1" endpointName="Endpoint1" />
</Bindings>
</Site>
</Sites>-->Check whether it works fine or not after the modification, moreover, I would recommend you to refer the link below for an article that explains how IISConfigurator.exe works:

Hi,
my ServiceDefinition.csdef file doesn't have any Sites element (I'm using a worker role).
The file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ServiceDefinition name="WindowsAzureProject3" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2008/10/ServiceDefinition"> <WorkerRole name="WorkerRole1" vmsize="Small"> <Imports> <Import moduleName="Diagnostics" /> </Imports> </WorkerRole> </ServiceDefinition>
Thus, I cannot comment out the Sites element as suggested. :-)
Any further ideas ?
Many thanks in advance,
Roberto Rocco

I'm not sure whether this is the same problem or not, but there is a known issue in the current release of the SDK if you a have a space in your user name, which you appear to have. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh472165.aspx for a workaround.

Hello Fernando,
Thankk you for your reply. I'Ve already set the Environment variable _CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY to c:\AzureTmp.
But I still keep getting the Error Message 'IISConfigurator.exe has stopped working'.
It seems that there must be another reason for this on my machine. :-(
Best regards,
Roberto Rocco

I have exactly the same problem, as long as I ignore the message box 'IISConfigurator.exe has stopped working' (I don't click the Close program button) compute emulator keep working and I am able to compile and run my project normally. When I have a web role I have to comment the Sites element like Ming Xu says.
I will be very glad if someone finds out why ISSConfigurator.exe crashes, it is annoying to work with this error message :-(
_CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY variable doesn't seem to help me either.

Hello Roberto,
Sorry to know that you're having this trouble and thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I'd like to know more about what exactly happened when IISConfigurator.exe crashed.
Could you do me a favor: send me an email to jiewan (the rest part is 'at msft' you know just to prevent spam bots) so I can reply to you with instructions on how to get a crash dump of that process and how to send it back to me via a secured channel.
Looking forward to work with you.

Hello Roberto,
I looked into the crash dump you provided. The IISConfigurator.exe crashed because of an unhandled System.Management.ManagementException.
The problem might be caused by a corrupted WMI repository on your machine.
You might want to try the following steps to fix it:
- Run a command window as administrator.
- Execute command "winmgmt /verifyrepository".
- If the command above tells you that the repository is not consistent, then execute command "winmgmt /salvagerepository".
For more information on rebuilding/reinstalling the WMI repository:

Please let me know how it works for you.
Thanks!

Hello Jay,
it seems that the WMI Repository is doing well on my machine.
Here's the result I got:

I encountered the same kind of problem and the repairing my WMI repository solved the problem for me
I used the following step
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
sc config winmgmt start= disabled (note that there is a blank between '=' and 'disabled')
net stop winmgmt
2. Rename the repository folder (located at %windir%\System32\wbem\repository) to repository.old.
3. Re-enable the WMI service.
sc config winmgmt start= auto
winmgmt /resetRepository
4. Reboot the server to see if the problem remains.

Hi Roberto,
Your crash dump indicates IISConfigurator.exe crashed when calling WMI. The objects on the stack show the WMI class it tried to connect was "Win32_Service"; the service to be accessed was "WAS" (Windows Process Activation Service); the property value to be requested was "StartMode".
To verify whether the "Win32_Service" class is actually broken on your system, open a command prompt window and run:
wmic path "Win32_Service" get NameIf the class works, it should list all the services on the machine, including "WAS".
Or we can write two lines of code in a .NET 3.5 console application to confirm. Create a .NET 3.5 console application project, add a reference to the System.Management.dll assembly:
static void Main(string[] args) { ManagementObject mo = new ManagementObject(string.Format("Win32_Service.Name='{0}'", "WAS")); Console.WriteLine(mo["StartMode"]); }
If the results indicate that WMI is broken on your machine, you may want to try the method described by Yonis in the post above; or you may consult some WMI experts on TechNet forums for more information.Please do let me know how it goes.
Thanks!

When I try to run the compute emulator (or to start an azure project out of VS) I also get the message "IISConfigurator.exe Stopped Working...". I tried every here descripted solution, reinstalled every componenten (IIS, AzureTools, VS...), but it does not help. Below you see the error stack that I get when IISConfigurator.exe crashes. Hope someone of you has an idea? I tried to solve this issue for several hours now, but I have no idea how to solve. Thank you!!
