You need to look into the installation logs in the windows temp folder to get more details about the failure. That should give us more clues to fix the issue.

As a try can you extract the Web Authoring tool ( which is in the WCU\WebDesignerCore folder in the installation media) using some tool like winzip\winrar and then try the installation of tool alone by clicking on the setup.exe file.

If you have installed a prerelease of Office 2007 the installation fails in that point, try to uninstall Office 2007 first.

I had a prerelease version of Expression Web on my machine, and uninstalling that let me get past the Web Authoring Component failure.

 

The log looked like this:

I have the exact same problem, log message is identical. I've tried manually extracting the Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component setup files and running them, but they refuse to find VisualWebDeveloper.WW\VWDWW.cab (even though I point them to their correct location.) If I do have to uninstall Office 2007 to get this working, can I reinstall this later afterwards?

 

PS: I do not (and never have) Expression Web installed.

I ran into the same issue w/ a clean install of Vista Ultimate - no prior installations of VS were installed. I finally solved this issue by disabling Windows Update during VS08 install. Apparently, Windows Update was locking a file used by "Web Authoring Component" and setup failed always.

I have the same problem installing VS2008. I had VS2208 Beta1 and Beta2.

I've tried everything what I found on the internal excluding whole Vista reinstall.

Bloody stupid Web Authoring Component crashes installation process everytime.

I CANNOT intstall/uninstall this piece of *** separately, it crashes too. Or displaying "amnezia" and cannot find path to "unstall" components.

 

Probably this is issue with some MUI packs? I had Vista Russian MUI, but unistalled it long time ago. I have Office 2007 Russian MUI now. What is going on? On my second PC I had no problem installing VS2008 (installed software combination is absolutely same on both PCs, including MUI packs).

 

How to uninstall/remove that bloody Visual Studio Web Authoring Component MANUALLY? Where are registry keys, files and folders? It's NOT LISTED in "Programs and features" list.

Hi I obviously have the same problem, I stopped the windows update service but again the setup fails.
I don't know how I should stop windows update to perform installation again.

by the way,I have a sony vaio fz 180 laptop and i was thinkin' it may be causing some problem.

Just a bit of a late follow-up from my end, but my problem was related to permissions on a folder in the ProgamData folder.

 

BTW: If anyone is installing manually (trying to diagnose their problem with the Web Authoring Component) and they get a message asking for a specific file, it appears that pointing to the right location isn't working. In reality, it just asks for that directory quite alot of times. Just select the correct folder the first time, and keep something heavy on the Enter key until the manual installation wizard gives you your actual error.

i also had this problem.

 

When i starting looking further in what kind of problem i was having i saw it was a security exception. 

 

In my .NET 2.0 CAS security settings, i changed the permission set from 'everything' to 'fulltrust' for the machine policy level, in the my computer zone code group.

 

both permission sets grant assemblies all permissions, but the fulltrust permission set skips security checks.

here was the quick way I solved this after spending ((( too much time )))) troubleshooting.....

 

I went to the downloads sections for the express versions and installed c# and visual web... after these installed I went back and installed  visual studio 2008 from an iso installer. ...  and it worked.

 

I did uninstall as much of the mentioned items in the prior posts as possible (before installing the express versions) btw... but .net 3.5 must be present (I did not see a way around that) when quickly looking at this.

This can (and will) happen if you're running Altiris SVS and any of your layers are active.  Just go into the SVS admin tool and deactivate all layers and VS2008 installs without a hitch.  This worked for me.  Here's a Microsoft KB article describing this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933568.

Its worth checking if you have IIS running.

 

My team had loads of trouble installing VS2008 and it always failed on the Visual Studio Web Authoring Component. Turning off IIS (or uninstalling it temporarily) should allow the component to install without problem.

I was having the same problem installing the web authoring tool, and this post worked like a charm to fix the problem.

 

It does not however explain why this installation would fail. I noticed that this identical problem was posted several times to the web, so apparently it is a common problem.  What is the cause of this problem and how can it be avoided?

I met this problem too.

 

my system:

windows xp pro en sp2, just installed and without any other path.

no 3rd-party software except daemon-tool 4.1. That is, no VS 2003/2005, no sql server, no office.

 

I tried to extract WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.exe to C:\WebDesignerCore

and run that setup.exe inside.

soon after it start to install it prompt for file "OfficeLR.cab".

of course the cab file exists in C:\WebDesignerCore\office.en-us\OfficeLR.cab, so i pointed it to that directory.

but that fool can't recognize it and prompt "Invalid location."

So I canceled and then anylse it's log file.

I found that it look for a service called ose.exe , which is a service of office, and if can't find that service, it try its own ose.exe file.

And that's where the problem is, its own file meet some problem with relative path ! Hence it can't find where OfficeLR.cab, 'cause it's path is "office.en-us\OfficeLR.cab" !

So...

Since Office is not yet installed, I download Office 2007 and installed it.

Then, when I install web authoring component again , it works !

Well after trying most of the solutions offered up here, it turned out extracting the web designer core and then running the setup manually helped me track it down. Every time I tried to run this I got the error regarding beta components from Office 2007 being installed, eventually tracked this down to the Outlook 2007 Calendar Printing Assistant that I had installed, so no the main install is back up & running. Thanks!

I traced down my problem to being unable to install the Visual Studio Web Authoring Component.

 

I am trying to install Visual Web Developer Express 2008.  I had just completed installing Visual C# 2008 Express with no problems.  I even fired it up once.  Then I rebooted.

 

I tried running the Visual Studio Web Authoring Component as a standalone setup.  I was able to extract it to C:\WebDesignerCore using winrar.  When I run setup and then choose Install Now, it churns for a bit and then asks me to find files for it (using the folder select common dialog).  I can't give it a folder that works.  It either asks again or simply brings up a small modal that says "Invalid Location".

 

Eventually I cancel.

 

I am stuck here.  VWD Express will not install without it.

 

I do have some other editions of Visual Studio installed.  I have VS.NET 2003 Professional, VS 2005 Professional, and VC# 2005 Express and the XNA Game Studio add-ons (Express and 2.0).

 

I have opened my setupexe log in %temp% and it is too big to post here.  Here is some possibly relevant information.  I have considered putting up a blog post with screenshots, but I do not know if this is helpful.

 

I did not install any prerelease versions if VS 2008, but I did have the Nov CTP of WCF and WPF for VS 2005.  I uninstalled those.  I also uninstalled WF for VS 2005, figuring I will just use VC# Express for these tasks.

 

But I do need VWD 2008 installed as well.

I was getting the Web Authoring Component install error.  I previously had VS 2005.  After unsuccessfully uninstalling several components, I decided to try to manually install the WAC.  Turns out that it was trying to install on this weird invalid directory path.  After directing it to a valid path, it installed corretly and so did VS 2008.

I am having the same problem.
I did have VS2008 installed, but had problems and long story short, I had to reinstall it or try to reinstall it.

I have tried:

• Manually installing the Web Authoring Component  - Didn't Work
• Removing the PDF/XPS Addin for Office 2007  - Didn't Work
• MsiExec.exe /x {30120000-00B2-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}  - Didn't Work
• Cleared my TEMP folder - Didn't Work
• Checked my ProgramFilesDir and made sure there weren't any trailing backslashes; there weren't. - Didn't Work
• Disabled the Automatic Updates Service - Didn't Work

I do not have Altiris SVS installed.

I am unable to try the uninstall of Office, because I don't have the install disks for it.

When I run the manual set up of the WAC I am getting an error popping up that says that "fpacsetup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

My error logs are giving no sign of what is causing this problem.

Can anyone give any other suggestions?

I know the answer is coming a little late... but anyways.. you CAN install office 2007 after installing Visual Studio 2008... at least its working for me and by uninstalling office it solved the problem of the Web authoring Component

hi again, im here to say i cheated on the instalation of Visual studio 2008, i read in another website the error happens becoz he needs a version of Web Designer Tools i didnt have any so i went to the registry and i have  created a new key -

HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Web Designer Tools\1033; Value: InstalledVersion; Version: 12.0.4518.1066.

that was the key i created, i found that problem on C:\Documents and Settings\"YOUR USER"\Local Settings\temp\dd_depcheck_VS_VSTD_90.txt

 i checked the .txt and he needs a version of web designer tools, if someone have that key but with another version its just changing for that Value ( 12.0.4518.1066 ) and resolve the problem ( i hope ).

in the .txt file appears more or less like this

Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component ==  
    This component uses the FileRegVerCheck version check method. It will compare a given version against the version of a regkey on your machine.

Can you try this?

1. Clear your temp folder, open command line type: rmdier /s /q %temp%
2. Run <VS install path>\WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.exe
3. Open Your temp folder, looking for Setup{Guid}.log
   
4. If you get something like "Catalyst beta product conflict check failed. ....,productcode={GUID}
5. Copy The GUID and run msiexec -x {GUID}

On my server, nothing above help. The Office Tool for VS.NET was the problem. after uninstalled it my machine is happy again.

Mine was failing until I fixed the registry 
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\VisualWebDeveloper
I didn't have permissions to this key and it wouldn't work, until I did.

To get mine to work, I extracted the component using 7-zip from the wcu directory in the DVD.

Then I ran the setup, and waited until it failed and gave me a more meaningful message which pointed to not being able to write to C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12\1033  I ran unlocker on the 1033 folder and it was being locked by a svchost.exe process. 

I killed the process and then selected retry on the dialog box.

the installation continued, and then I was able to run setup again and complete the installation. Go Figure.

I can't do a "try and error" removing applications, so to finish the (temporary) VS2008 installation, so, I decide to skip the Web Authoring portion adding a fake key:

Then, restarted the VS2008 setup , now I have VB and C## on this system.

That did the trick for me. To clarify the previous post, copy the highlighted text and paste it into a reg file. For example, create a file named WDT.reg and use Notepad to paste the text into file. Double-click the reg file and it will insert the key for you. The end result should look something like this (I used 12.0.4518.1066 instead of the 12.0.4518.1067 as in the previous post):

         Web Designer Tools                          ab (Default)               REG_SZ   (value not set)

              1033                                           ab InstalledVersion    REG_SZ   12.0.4518.1066

After adding the key:

1. A custom installation was attempted with Visual Web Developer unchecked. (Don't know if unchecking was actually necessary.)
2. The installation successfully completed (it required a reboot before it was done).
3. After the requested items were installed, the Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 option was selected.
4. Next, Add or Remove Features was selected.
5. Visual Web Developer was checked and it appeared to install successfully, but the Web Designer design view does not work. Source view works and the built-in webserver work.

The Application event log shows warnings such as these:

Well I tried installing the component separately from \WCU\WebDesignerCore in the setup folder, and an 'Access denied' message popped up. The message was clear, it was the Trend Micro Office Scan software on the machine that was blocking the installation of the component (blocks .inf files).
Resolved at last!

I was having the same problem.
I don't have any pre-release versions of Expression Web installed, instead i have Expression Web 2 installed on my machine.
I uninstalled it and the setup went completely smooth.
I guess Microsoft wasn't expecting any user to install Expression Web and Visual Web Developer on the same machine, since they're pretty much of similar nature.

For me the problem was the permissions in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft folder.

Fixed it by opening command prompt and typing

TakeOwn /F C:\ProgramData\Microsoft /R /D y

then

icacls C:\ProgramData\Microsoft /grant Administrators:F /T

My actual situation is, vista home edition, old office 2002, c# 2008 express and web developer 2008 express installed.

When trying to install the web developer SP1, it hangs up on web authoring component.

 

Now I try to install the  WebDesignerCore.EXE apart, I can see it working in task manager resource monitor for a couple of minutes.

Then nothing appends. The web authoring component is not installed.

John Paul Cooks's solution was RIGHT ON!  Thank you SOOOO much John for drafting this procedure; we'd been fighting this for hours yesterday, and having gone through all the suggestions in this thread...including the ALTIRIS issue...the IIS issue...the Microsoft Office 2007 components issues...and so forth...this was the ONLY SOLUTION that worked, and enabled us to complete the entire installation of Visual Studio 2008 Professional.  Again, many thanks!...Mark

I agree. Creating a new registry key was the only solution that worked for me.
I did it on a brand new installed windows 7,   Visual studio being the first program to be installed.
Thanks for your help, it saved me lots of headache.
