What version of SharePoint are you using? Whilst MOSS allows you to select master pages, WSS doesn't. There is a project on CodePlex which when installed will allow you to select a masterpage (http://spmasterpicker.codeplex.com/)
Another thing to bear in mind is that when you add a new item to a list/library etc, these pages use the application.master page. This is different from your normal master page so do some research into that if you want the same look and feel across every page in your site(s)

- Hi Rachel,
My understanding:
1) You have developed a custom master page
2) You want to apply this to a sub site and all sites under the sub site
Add the custom master page to the Site collection --> Master Page Gallery
After this you will be able to see the Master Page listed in the drop down than appears in the Site Actions --> Site Settings --> Master Page [Look and Feel]
1) Add the custom master page to the site collection gallery
2) Approve it
3) Go to the Sub Site where you want to set the new master page
4) Go to the Sub site --> Site action -> site settings -->Master Page [Look and Feel]
5) select the "Specify a master page to be used by this site and all sites that inherit from it."
6) In this page you can choose the new master page that you have developed from the drop down
7) select the check box "Reset all subsites to inherit this Site Master Page setting"
8) do the same for both the "site master page" and "system master page" in that page
9) click on Ok
Hope this helps

- Please note that I'm marking the above reply from Raghavan as the correct answer, but it applies to sites in a Publishing portal. If you are using WSS, this does not apply.
Thanks

http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog - where is the master page gallery located??under site setting i see only theme selection... (al themes there are using the same default masterpage)it is not a published site...any suggestions???
Rachel_Dru - in my case, it's wss.... what to do?
Rachel_Dru - i did a little diggin, but came out empty handed...a little help would be appreciated...
Rachel_Dru The sites in WSS 3.0 use their own default.master in _catalog folder, so there is no OOB way to change them in one shot.
You should change the master pages of all the site manually.
Hope the information can be helpful.

Lambert Qin,
I am UNMARKING your reply as an answer because simply stating that there's no easy way to do something and it has to be done manually, does NOT qualify in my view as an answer. As a fellow moderator, you should refrain from marking your own posts as answers unless they truly are complete answers beyond any doubt.
I am marking the reply from Dave Payett as the answer because it is closest to solving the problem for Rachel_Dru.
Thanks

http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog- I have marked Dave's answer as the answer since it comes closest to a real solution for this question. I wish to point out that the "default.master" page can be edited on the file system in the 12 hive in order to make a global branding change to all WSS sites in the farm, but since the question was asked about setting the master page on a sub site, Dave's solution is the most correct.
Thanks
