    Hi,

In our farm, in database server, database alias name has been changed due to some reasons.

So now when we are opening Central Administration we are getting error as below

    Cannot connect to configuration database

We trouble shooted this issue by trying different options like restarting central admin application pool in IIS, restarting MS SQL Server etc.

Database server admin has confirmed that database is not in the ‘suspect’ mode, database server is up.

Database admin has provided the new alias name that has been renamed with old one

Now we want update new database alias name in the SharePoint side to avoid this error.

Please let me know where we can update new database alias name to avoid the same in SharePoint.

Awaiting for your ideas on the same. Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    Sudheer

Have you run PSConfig to disconnect the server and then run it again to join back to the configuration database with the new alias?

    Any permissions changes?

EDIT: if you've done any manual updates to things like the web.config make sure you take a backup of the virtualdriectorys and 14 hive before disconnecting as it will remove files and sites during the disconnect but "reinstall" them when you join again, but will configure based on what sharepoint "thinks" the web.config and files should look like, ignoring any manual updates you've made.

    Hi,

Finally i came to conclusion that, once in database server alias name is created,it can't be created.

Because when we run the configuration wizard for sharepoint installation,it creates lot of tables with that alias name.So if we rename the alias name,it can't rename all the tables in the database.

So if we want to rename the database alias name,we have to rename alias name and rebuild the farm, run the sharepoint wizard once again.
