Simple Time Sheet in SharePoint 2010

Hello,
So first I will admit that I'm a SP newb. I just installed and deployed SP2010 in our network, and all went well so far.
I am trying to come up with a simple way for our consultants to report their hours. Currently, we have an Excel template that we fill out and email to our dispatcher, but I would like to use SharePoint instead.
All that we need is the name of the employee, the date, and a breakdown of the hours, something like:
-----
Bob Smith 8/2/2012
8a-10a: troubleshooting network issues at client X
10a-12p: installing server for client b
1p-5p: installing rest of servers and PCs for client b
-----
And hopefully as you enter your hours, the form will add them up.
I played with the built-in timecard template in SharePoint 2010 but it is too basic.
Any suggestions? Can I edit the built-in timecard template or can I set up a simple form and workflow? Any links/tutorials would be greatly appreciated!
