AppFabric won't install - tried various solutions

    Question

  • I'm trying to install the prerequisites for SharePoint 2013 (on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1)

Like many others, I'm having troubles installing SP 2013 because the AppFabric part of the prerequisites is not installing.  Unlike others, there is really no error in the log.  After it starts installing appfabric, it shows the finish window, with AppFabric: installation error, and reboots machine.

    I have tried:

Altering and then removing the PSModulePath environment variable.

Downloading and running the AppFabric setup using the command window with the appropriate parameters (/i CacheClient,CachingService,CacheAdmin /gac).  Also started up the prerequisite installer from the command line specifying the appfabric setup file.

AppFabric is not and was not installed prior to installation. (it is not available to uninstall).  WIndows update is on, and I have applied all available updates.

Here are the relevant lines from the log:

  • This could be your issue:

Your FTP service should not be running when you try to install the app fabric.

    1. From a command prompt, type services.msc to open up the Services window.
    2. Locate Microsoft FTP Service.
    3. If the Microsoft FTP Service is running, please stop it.
    4. Try the SharePoint prerequisite installation again.

  • There is no Microsoft FTP Service in the services list. (nor one named similar)

The above log also confirms this.

2013-03-20 08:56:06 - FTP service is not installed.

  • Sorry, I missed that.

Did you install this hotfix? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2708075

I believe it is required so that the prerequisite installer can update the appropriate configuration in IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2, which I believe includes the ftp service.

    See this documentation: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx#section4

  • The hotfix had not been applied. However, after applying it and restarting the server, the install still failed in the same fashion.  (note: the Microsoft FTP Service is still not in the list of services on the server)

  • I doubt this is your problem (I haven't run into this yet), but this blog mentions the task scheduler service. Did you happen to make sure it was enabled?

  • Yes, the Task Scheduler is enabled.

  • What happened when you tried to install it manually? Did you get any kind of errors or warnings?

  • No errors popped up, and there was nothing in the windows event log.  There was also no confirmation that it was successfully installed.

Basically, a small window popped up that appeared to be unpackaging the components, then it is closed.  That's it.

(I just ran it again to confirm)

  • Hey Justin,

I am having the same issue.  Did you find a solution?

    Wednesday, June 19, 2013 4:17 PM
  • No. I tried everything I could find on the issue, but eventually just built a new VM.

  • Hello

FWIW Remote registry is also a dependency for AppFabric.  There is also a log file that is generated by AppFabric in C:\Users\%username%\appData\Local\temp

  • Yes the remote registry is enabled.  I have check the logs.  It is the below entries that I can't figure out:

    ========

2013-06-19 09:35:29 - All services have been configured successfully after AppFabric installation
2013-06-19 09:35:29 - Installing Cumulative Update Package 1 for Microsoft AppFabric 1.1 for Windows Server (KB2671763)

  • Take a look at this thread:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ca385a64-bbd7-433f-b5f2-ff6e9e2fbc61/sp2013-appfabric-issue

It appears to be a bug in the install. There is a workaround posted there.

  • Yes.  I was the one who posted the workaround.

  • I experienced similar thing today on Windows server 2012, the proper troubleshooting step I think is reviewing Windows Event log and MSI installation log.

But it was not caused by the incorrect PSModulePath environment variable value I my case this time. I was installing directly from the ISO file. I copied all files out from the ISO file and run the prerequisite again, now its OK. It's strange, I don't know why, maybe run installation directly from ISO file is not the direct/root cause. But the phenomenon I see make me think it is.
