Windows Live Messenger Freezes Every so often

    질문

  •

Ever since I installed Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.5, and ever since I think I installed Java Update 6,

WLM 8.5 constantly freezes.  Its kind of like not responding for say 5 seconds, or sometimes longer, and then

it springs back to life and goes back to normal.

I type and all of a sudden the words stop, but if I keep typing, 10 seconds later all the words come up in one go.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times, I have reverted back to MSN version 7.5, etc and earlier versions,

I have tried uninstalling Java, using different versions of Java, not running any Java whatsoever.

But it seems to keep giving me these random freezes / temporary lock ups no matter what I do.

Any ideas of what is causing this and what my solution is?  No other program does this at all, not Yahoo Messenger or anything.

    My Computer specs are :

  • FIX!!!
SIMPLE, WORTH A READ AND NO MESSING WITH REGISTRY!!

First, I want to say: I am using XP Home w/SP3. Who knows: This may even work with Vista...CoughCough(sucks)hehe.

OK...I have been reading through forums every chance i had for a couple days now and it all started with WLM not even showing up and still showing many processes in the task manager.
I re-installed Messenger a couple times. This did not work. I finally got it working after deleting some registry keys.

Great! My msn works!!! Right?      !!!!!!!
    BUT!!!!!!!!

When I try to start a call, share video or even try audio video setup...freezes. I opened port 1900 and allowed it in my firewall...no luck. Time to start reading more forums...UREKA!!! I found a post in this forum dated 20Dec 2007 posted by DavidLeeSmith making reference to
attempting to discover up-stream gateway devices via SSDP / UPnP. Instead of deleting or modifying the registy entry as suggested in the link he posted I tryed this. Only on a hunch so as not to have to do a system restore due to being unsuccessful.

THIS WORKED AND THIS IS WHAT I DID...Soo simple.

Select start/run. Type services.msc then select OK.

A sevices window will open. **DO NOT MESS WITH THESE UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING***
You can seriously F**K up your sytem beyond restoration permanently with one wrong click!!! Really.

Ok...that said, locate the service named SSDP Discovery Service.
    RT click and select Properties.
Once open select Stop then change the startup type to Disable.
select ok then close everything out including messenger. Restart your system and messenger works fine.
I repeated the above and changed the startup back to automatic as well as started the service and Live messenger never worked better.

Hope this will work for others as well.

  • It's a joke, I have the same problem.  EVERYTHING else runs perfectly, your post was made on the 12th of september yet they still havn't fixed the problem, maybe I'll just stop using their program it's a joke this freezing, really.

  • I have the same problem, I am just shocked nobody at MS has sorted this out.

Friends had to start using trilliane because of this issue, and I'm close to. Not only does it freeze up, it occasionally crashes my computer when multiple users are using the machine, which gets very, very, very annoying.

I have noticed when transferring emoticons, audio, or initiating any sort of connection, it locks up ! How hard can it be to fix ?? How hard is it for an application to send a tiny animated .gif ?

Anyway, it is proposterous that this bug has been allowed to continue. Get MSN working !!!!!!!!!!

  • I have also had this problem. But it started even before 8.5 for me. I believe it started at 8.0 beta. But it has only steadily gotten worse. I reformated my computer at one point and the problem was still happening. Another thing I noticed is that when I use my 'lifecam vx3000' and try to click a link in the window it's totally freezes up WLM so that I have to restart. I can't even end WLM through task manager. And the lifecam doesn't always start up. Sometimes it locks up WLM just while it's starting up. It works in skype. The only other program I really have problems with freezing on this computer is the lifecam program. It takes forever to start up, just like WLM.

However all these problems with WLM freezing every few seconds happened even before I had a webcam.

  • I also have the same problem and I have never used Beta software.  The similarity I see is that I bought a Life Cam and installed a Java update around the same time the periodic freeze began to happen.  I too have removed both of these using a Restore Point.  I even updated to WLM 8.5 and the freezing continues.  It hangs during receipt of a users message to my machine I think.   For about 5 seconds I can do nothing and eventually I get their message and mine is sent.

  • Sounds like maybe I am experiencing something different, but still seems applicable to this thread.

Windows Live Messenger freezes completely on me pretty much every day, and sometimes several times a day. But it does not come unfrozen. Just locks up completely and the main messenger window goes white and has Not Responding in the title.

This has never happened to me while using messenger, it always happens when messenger is idle. I'll leave my computer for a while, and when I come back I notice that Messenger is just stalled completely.

This is really annoying and has been happening ever since I upgraded to Live, many months ago. Completely program freezes and lockups should be a thing of the past. Hard to believe that the biggest and most powerful software company still puts *** like this out. But, I guess what can one expect from free software? I'd be happy to pay for it if that would guarantee that MS would actually put out a quality product.

  • I'm having all the same problems. Does anyone have a clue how to fix it???

    2007년 11월 16일 금요일 오후 11:38
  • Hey guys,

windows live messenger does not do that for me anymore.

I believe that it is because I had my CPU and Video Card overclocked!!

I underclocked my CPU a bit, and I completely turned back the Video Card settings to default.

I'm not sure if it is either the CPU overclocking that does it, or the Video Card over clocking, or

    a mixture of the two!

Have you guys overclocked either your CPU or Video Card??

Because it seems that that was why it was doing it for me.

All I did was underclock the CPU and videocard, and it seemed to work fine.

Good Luck guys, I know exactly how frustrating that can be ~

    Mark

  • I've discovered the cause of this problem!!

My firewall (PC tools Firewall Plus) has a history page that shows blocked communications.  Coinciding with the freezes in MSN, there is a port access thats being blocked.  Port 1900.

Once i added a rule to allow comms to that port, the freezes stopped!

Good luck getting this done on your computer!
    2007년 11월 19일 월요일 오후 3:22
  • Well, I don't overclock, and the only firewall I have is the windows firewall, which already has an exception in it for messenger.

Still, messenger becomes unresponsive at least once a day, and always this happens when it is not being used, so I have no clue as to exactly what else is going on at the moment that it becomes unresponsive.

  •

It seems Messenger may be blocking while attempting to discover up-stream gateway devices via SSDP / UPnP.  Please read this article for a suggestion on disabling this service

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q317843

or optionally maybe you can add port 1900 UDP traffic to your firewall.

Hope this helps - I added port 1900 and it seems to have corrected the issue.  If later I find it did not correct it I will attempt to disable discovery in messenger using the registry change specified in the MS KB article.

  • Hey guess wat? I'm avin the same problem and ive tried all ur soloutions and they didnt work and i tried using msn 7.5 but it said i had to get the newer version of msn!

    2007년 12월 22일 토요일 오후 6:40
  • I know the problem and i know how to fix it the reason it freezes in the middle of you typing is because your computer does a refresh check ever 5 min wich means your computer checks what it is doing every 5 min and if you are typing during that check it freezes till the check is over

that is one explanation the other one is

you are typing too fast for the computer to tell what you are typing to it needs a few seconds to catch up.

if slowing down your typing doesn't help then all you have to do is disk defragment every 5 days and clear your cookies and browsing history so your computer runs smoother the problem shouldn't happen if you do that

but it all depends on your computer

    hope this helps

  •

Omg. That is hilarious. Yeah guys, just stop typing so fast. Jeeze. Also... a refresh check? Really? You've got to be kidding me. Did you just make that up or do you really think that happens?

That was probably the most uninformed, misleading, confused and useless "answers" I have ever seen! LOL.

  • hey Doomlife...I don't understand what you are talking about....have basic knowledge of comps...but never heard of (undocking) either or....CAn you help me?

I also have all the freezes going on...very annoying!

    2008년 2월 8일 금요일 오후 5:45
  •

Well i was looking too for an answer and i have found the solution because i started thinkin and i got it, i remember someday i went to a ciber-coffee and unfortunately i had to plug in my usb memory, and guess what the mess problems started that day so i have just unpplugged my usb memory and guess what mess problems have gone i guess its a virus or something however my antivirus sayed it cleaned it up from the *** at that horrible place with no protection at all XD

  • Yeah I just installed WLM 8.5 not even a week ago and it froze my computer and made me have to restart about 10 times now. And its february....you'd think they would have done something about it by now. I wonder if anyone that works there actually read these forums.
    2008년 2월 25일 월요일 오전 3:17
  •

i understand what all of you are going through. My computer is no more than 4 months old, when i had it, it came with WLM 8.0 running on vista. At the time it didnt freeze, just minor freezes for like 3-5 secs, but then it would go back to normal, eventually, even if im not using it, and i have it in the task manager, it pops up and says windows live messenger needs to close. sometimes it says its because of some data prevention *** or something like that im not even sure. BUt i've seen a lot of forums on this and microsoft isnt doing shyt about it. a month later i upgraded to vista ultimate, its even worst now, it freezes every 10-15mins. BILL GATES   WHERE THE F R U?
    2008년 3월 2일 일요일 오전 4:02
  • WLM was freezing on me too and I tried a few fixes that worked for awhile and then back to freezing. Now it is permanently fixed. I upgraded from Norton Systemworks 2006 and Norton Personal Firewall 2006 to NSW 2008 and Norton Internet Security 2008 and everything is working perfectly. Last year I didn't buy 2007 because the auto-renew feature downloaded the subscription renewal. The 2008 version seems to have done the trick.
    2008년 3월 14일 금요일 오전 5:02
  • I think the problem just needs to be resolved.  Mine does freeze every 5 minues or so.  I've checked the ports: they're correctly.  typing fast has obviously nothing to do with it.

I feel that this thread isn't being worked on until an adminstrator responds to this thread stating that the problem is being worked on.

I reformated my Dell computer using a genuine copy of Windows XP Professional (clean fresh install).  Only programs are Creative Suite CS3 Design Premium, Firefox & Safari Beta (for web development) and that's it.

Specs are very similar to the original thread starter... nVidia 8600 GT, intel 2.2ghz dual core (centrino santa rosa processor).  there's really no reason why this should continue to freeze up on a perfectly new computer.
    2008년 3월 23일 일요일 오전 8:16
  • I think this thread has to be kept alive to try and fix this problem, specifically the one in the original message which is the problem that I have. It started just as I downloaded the new messenger (8.5.1302.1018)

    2008년 3월 23일 일요일 오후 7:35
  •

The solution that DavidLeeSmith gave did the trick for me

And if it didn't do the trick, at least I haven't seen messenger freeze yet, so it at least reduced the number of freezes that occurs.

He just gave this link, which I'll post up again

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q317843

Oh, and I tried adding 1900 to my firewall, and it didn't work, but this registry fix seemed to have done it.

    2008년 3월 23일 일요일 오후 11:11
  • try your internet connection...the connection freezes...i had the same problem...to solve it i decided to uninstall my internet modem (adsl) and then re-install it...it worked and nw my WLM works perfectly.

    2008년 4월 6일 일요일 오후 8:17
  • I don't suppose you've ever found a solution to this?   I have been having this problem for AGES and every few months I search the Internet for answers.  I'm so sick of this.  I can't even have Messenger up on my computer if I plan to step away for any period of time, so I don't even bother signing in anymore!
    2008년 4월 18일 금요일 오전 4:16
  • Just recently David's previous post had started working fine.  I would like to request a Microsoft Developer to create a patch to fix this issue for consumers.  Windows Live Messenger is an essential to Windows XP and Vista operating systems and should be bug-free; therefore I don't believe the consumers should be responsible for fixing Windows Live Messenger themselves in order to work smoothly on their computer.

If you guys are still having issues, please ask to request a Microsoft Developer in this forum to fix this issue.  Hopefully this article gains enough attention.

Please follow these steps.  They have seemed to work for most people on this forum.  They started working for me earlier.  Here is the direct link once again: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q317843

    ****RESOLUTION****

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To resolve this issue, configure the registry to turn off the discovery messages:
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlayNATHelp\DPNHUPnP
    3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
    Value name: UPnPMode
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: 2
    4. Quit Registry Editor.

    NOTE
: If you set UPnPMode to 2, Universal Plug and Play Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal discovery does not occur.

  • I don't want to jinx it, but I implemented the registry change over an hour ago and my MSN hasn't hung yet!!!!!!  It appears that this truely is the solution I've been looking for for all of these months!  THANKS, SO MUCH!
    2008년 4월 18일 금요일 오전 5:17
  • you're welcome KBF!  I'm glad the issue has been resolved.  Credit should go to member DavidLeeSmith for posting the solution first.  If I hadn't come across that post I'm sure most of us (including me) would be left unsatisfied.
    2008년 4월 18일 금요일 오전 5:24
  • Darn.  I spoke too soon and jinxed it.  I'm back to the same old problem, today.  Sigh.
    2008년 4월 18일 금요일 오후 7:34
  • I fixed it! I uninstalled it, then installed it again but when you install it, DO NOT install the sponsor program, after I did that, it worked again, it could just have randomly started working again and it might have been a coincidence, but try it, it could work!

    2008년 4월 19일 토요일 오후 6:23

    1. rich click it.

    2. select properties

    3. select the compatibility tab

4.check the box "run this program in compatability mode for:" and then select "windows xp (service pack 2)"

    6. select ok.

    7. run messenger!

it worked for me, i havnt had any issues for literally 3 days, record as my  messenger would freeze evry 10 mins

    2008년 4월 26일 토요일 오후 1:16
  • Yeah I have the exact same problem... and your solution doesn't work Mercilesschild.

And that registry thing is only for Windows XP I guess because I can't use 'Edit' and then 'Add value'

    *sigh*... this is annoying

i've read all posts and replies and like many of you i'm fed up with this peace of Sh** they call wlm, it is by far the worst edition of messengers of all times, full of bugs and conflicting files..

I tried over and over again with those losers in the tech support, i tried all fixes on the net, i even FORMATTED MY PC only to find out that none of that had any effect whatsoever to solve these stubborn freezing problems..

and now i want to go to sleep because i feel depressed and power drained.. but before that a little prayer is needed:

OH DEAR GOD OF HEAVENS, PLEASE SEND SOME OF YOUR ARCHANGELS TO HELP THESE LOSERS IN MICROSOFT PUT THEIR SH** TOGETHER AND FIX THE DAMN THING!!!

    THANK YOU LORD..

Unfortunatly, I won't stop using messenger because its one of my favourite apps!

  • I tried the registry fixes but i don't think they worked...then I tried the solution posted above by Insl8r (Run->Services.msc, then stop the SSDP and disable them on startup) and I think this solution seems to have worked for me (I also have winxp sp3).  After trying a million other things like deleting hundreds of contacts from my contact list to speed up how the contacts are loaded, and even installing A-patch to disable ads and unnecessary features to no avail, i'm glad someone finally solve this for me! (No thanks to microsoft -- they're still sitting idly twiddling their thumbs while we figure things out on our own). So far no hiccuping or freezing while typing, and the startup time for WLM has also improved greatly (used to take 30seconds or more, now it pops in like 5 seconds).  Definitely worth a try!  Note, I did not re-enable the SSDP after I restarted as suggested, and it doesn't seem to affect anything, so I think I will just leave it disabled.

  • Had no problems on my Vista Toshiba Satellite until MSN 8.X recommended I upgrade. I had seen the new one and how horrible it was but I figured I should update so I can get any security patches that might come out (cough cough)...

Now it's freezing whenever the computer is running hard. I run computers hard. I'm not going to let it idle so MSN can work. I use this thing for WORK, not to idle it.

WLM locks up and won't even redraw it's window. I have tried all the fixes in this thread and nothing. Why are you sending out alpha-grade software as recommended upgrades? How can I get the old 8.X back?

  • Adding a String Value to the register did the trick. Follow the instructions and it works perfectly fine after restarting WLM

Hope this will work for others as well.

does this really work? don't want to **** up my computer, I just had a clean windows 7 instal and WLM is already going batshit.
I do have the same problems like the OP

  • insl8r's solution worked perfect for me, thanks a lot insl8r!!!

now i'll try to restart the service and observe live messenger's behaviour. and of course, i'll report back.

  • yes this worked fine for me, but i didn't try to restart the service, yet.
    2009년 11월 25일 수요일 오후 8:29
  • It worked for me, but when I reactivate the service, wlm isn't working as it should be working... It freezes again and such..
but, I wonder what the service does :p

  • Guys, I had that same problem..
one account was working and another one wasn't.

    So we did this:

    Go to:

    c:\documents and settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

Remove the entries that you have under that folder.

    Worker like a charm. :D

    Thanks!

    2009년 12월 6일 일요일 오전 8:08
  • Yeah, I had that too, so I keep that service closed :)
Since the service is closed I never had those problems again so I think it's a good solution.
But it would be nice to know what the service is for, just to feel... sure :)

  • I've had the exact same problem on Windows 7 RC and now Windows 7 Professional (both x64). I've been using alternative clients for months now, and I'm fed up with them. I would like to return to using WLM9, but cannot because it hangs every 7ish seconds. I've done every 'solution' on this page, none of which work, probably because they are for XP / 32bit. Looking for a real solution soon from Microsoft, like a hotfix/patch. Support your damn application.

  • Oops, sorry, Sprinkles 1, accidently hit the propose as answer button on your post, anyway, I think i might have got something figured with this.  I've been experimenting with MSN for a while now since this freezing problem cropped up for me about a month ago and I think i've fixed it, at least for my system.  I completely uninstalled wlm2009 and live mail as good measure, then i found wpsetup-all and installed that (it took some searching but i was successful, and it's 134mb so people with slow connections be ready if you wanna try this...).  Then I went to log in and it told me i couldn't because i had to update messenger, which i finally did, fearing the worst would happen if i did so.  However!  Msn now seems to base itself out of the little taskbar icon where it used to be in vista and XP, and not where it normally is as a quicklaunch type icon on the taskbar of Win7, though I have the newest version installed I think, not sure how to check.  Anyway, since doing this, wlm has not locked up once, i can access emotions, open messenger windows and start typing immediately, and log in immediately.  So, it's either the issue of where the icon location is (taskbar by the clock or as a quicklaunch sort of icon) OR the version people keep getting from microsoft in the regular way keep getting corrupted.  Either way i'm kinda too happy having WLM9 actually work now to risk more testing to verify, but if someone else wants to, maybe this is helpful :).

  • Guys

remove all the files inside ..

    It worked .

    2nd and it's simple

    a.      Open Internet Explorer

    b.      Go to Tools -> Internet Options

    c.       Go to Connections tab

    d.      Click on LAN settings button

    e.      Uncheck Automatically detect settings

  • Hi all, I have always had problems with MSN Messenger and later WLM as long as I can remember, today I downloaded WLM thinking let me try again (after 2 years!) It also froze on my XP SP3 directly after logging in, well after about 10 seconds. I also tried all the proposed fixed in this forum and from MS's website, that didn't work either! I finally right clicked on the WLM shortcut and selected Properties, then Advanced and finally Run with different credentials, I use an Administrator account, I left the default Administrator in the name field and in the password field typed my password I use to login to Windows. This worked perfectly but does not make any sense since this is the credentials used by default anyway - but either way it works! Anyone have any idea as to why it works?

  • I have a windows XP with a sp3.  My messenger had been working until last friday and it froze up as soon as i logged onto it, though it did not log on all the way.  It permanently froze and i had to end the program.  no matter what i did, that would happen.  i removed/uninstalled messernger and now i cant even re-install it.  it keeps coming up with an error about not being able to install "Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime."  can anyone help me out? ^^  I really miss messenging and I would like to get it re-installed and have it actually work.  Thank you.

  • I had just the same problem with the current  Build (14.0.8089.726) running on  XP SP3.

My Messenger would run a few Minutes and then crash/freeze to the point where I had to manually kill it's task.

By Chance I did a cleanup of old programs and components and after completely uninstalling all versions of Dot Net (yes on this old Machine I had 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 installed) WLM suddenly stopped crashing.

A Tool to help removing DotNet can be found here

I hope this will help some of you, with similar problems.

  • Guys, i finally fixed my issue here.

Windows Live Messenger Hangs in Win7...

It started about 9 or 8 months ago, since then i was forced to use msn via a Windows XP VmWare computer.

My computer has Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit installed, a quad cored Phenom 9950be 4gb ram and an HD5870 gpu.

I once tried to format the system in hope it will fix the issue, but it continued.

I tried all the possible fixes on this page, but nothing seems to work for my case. So i desperately downloaded "A-patch" from here http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/06/23/remove-ads-from-windows-live-messenger-with-a-patch-and-customize-messenger-options-and-visualisation/

and removed all ads (actually everything it could remove).

Note that i downloaded the latest (wave 4) version of MSN.

Now, after patching was done, the hangs stopped the next time i started up msnmsgr.exe !

I hope this works for the rest of you guys who are still facing this problem

  • For the love of God..... I really don't understand WHY THE ____ Windows Live Messenger follow the Internet Explorer configuration... everybody knows that IE is a bug that comes bigger and Microsoft turned it into a ____ browser..........

bobodread, I want to tell you that BillGates is the most rich people in the world... but this is just because we don't know you!

Your answer goes directly into the problem.... I was using trillian for about 3 months because of this problem...

I never used IE, so, auto search in LAN settings was turned on by default...

I love FireFox, Opera, Chrome, Jozé Browser, and hate IE Forever!!!

MSN does not allow you to choose or specify what proxy you want to use... it depends on IE ____ configuration

Go to the ____ Bill Microsoft...
