CAL Tracking in SharePoint 2010

Question

In a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 briefing deck from 2009 (SharePoint_SKU_och_licensiering.pptx), it talks about “CAL Tracking in SharePoint 2010” as a “New capability to capture usage data in SharePoint to create an organizational license usage report”.

Can someone point me to how this is accomplished?

For those organisations that wish to have most of the company only using Standard functionality and a smaller subset of customers with Enterprise functionality, then they must be able to prove that they are licensed correctly.

This can be achieved through a structured permission model, that only permits users that are a member of a security group, to have access to sites that have enterprise features enabled.

Microsoft have provided the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit to help monitor and report on this.  More details about this Solution Accelerator can be foundhere.

There are also 3rd party tools out there to track ECal usage as well, such as the RDA ECAL Tracker.

The PowerPoint brief indicates that CAL Tracking is a new feature built-in to SharePoint 2010. No need for MAP or RDA. But I can not find any detials on this “New capability to capture usage data in SharePoint to create an organizational license usage report”

Hi,

as far as I know this feature is not available in SharePoint 2010. It is quite possible that it was supposed to be available, but never made it in.
