Answered SQL Azure Pricing (I am confused)

I am not sure that I understand the SQL Azure pricing correctly according to here:  http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/pricing/calculator/advanced/

As far as I understood, it is 99.99/mo per database up to 10 GB.

In my case, I have 3 databases (two of them are less than 1 GB, other is around 2 GB)

So, if my calculation is correct, I would be paying 299.97 USD per month for my 3 databases which are totally around 3 GB.

Please tell me that I am wrong!

    Hi,

    You are "wrong" :)

There are Web Edition Databases with 1Gb and 5Gb, and Business Editons with 10,20,40,50, 100 and 150Gb

For 1 web edition database with less then 1Gb you'll pay 9.99$/mo

For 1 web edition database with more then 1Gb and less then 5Gb you'll pay 49.95$/mo

If you have 1 database with more than 5Gb you'll have to "buy" one Business Edition database and you'll pay 99.99/mo for each 10Gb slot (with max pricing = 499.50$/mo)

    NOTE: prices are per database.

In your case you'll pay 9.99/mo x2 for your two 1Gb databases and 49.95$/mo for your 2Gb database.

Your total bill will be 69.93$/mo

Since your databases are below 5GB size, they would be considered as web edition. In your case, it would be ($9.99 + $9.99 + $19.98) per month.

    HTH.

Sorry, Rajesh is right, Web Edition billing increments are now = 1Gb, (In the past they were 1Gb and 5Gb only).

Attention "they would be considered as web edition" it's not completely right, If you create them as Business Edition they will not be considered Web Edition.

Thanks guys. You cleared my head.

    One more question:

Can I upgrade my database in the future? For example, let's say it grows and has a size above 1 GB, can I change it to be over 1 GB?

And one more thing: Does this include the ldf file size as well or is it free?

    Hi,

About size: Yes, you can change MAXSIZE and EDITION : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ff394109.aspx

    About ldf: Yes, it's free.

Hi, this is not right after all, the billing increments didn't change:

If your Web Edition database is less than 1 GB you are charged for a 1 GB database. If you use over 1 GB, then you are charged for a 5 GB database. AT

    https://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/home/tour/sql-azure/

So it will be as I first said:

you'll pay 9.99/mo x2 for your two 1Gb databases and 49.95$/mo for your 2Gb database.

Your total bill will be 69.93$/mo

I can see why it will be confusing. I think the trouble with such changes is that the cloud providers cant really make it clear for each customer how these changes will impact them.

We have designed a tool which helps you do exactly what your question is asking - 'How much will it cost me?'. Check us out: www.ShopForCloud.com, once you sign up you can model how your deployment looks (as you mentioned above), then the tool will produce a cost forecast for you with the latest prices.

Let me know how you get on and if you need any help.
