Answered Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 service Pack 1

    I'm running win 7 64 bit and have installed service pack one. It says it is installed correctly and all seems fine until I start visual studio which gives me this:

    Only some of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 products on this computer have been upgraded to Service Pack 1, None will work correctly until all have been upgraded.

    To upgrade, close all Visual Studio Products and then install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, If setup starts in Mainenance Mode, select Repair"

    I have done this repeatedly - i get the reapply or uninstall options... reapply seems to work but the problem remains. I do not have lightswitch installed but do have windows SDK - i'm not sure where the conflict is coming from

    Windows version = Professional

    Everything (apart from the OS itself) is from the msdn website - i believe the OS is also official as part of a volume licensing deal but have no idea where it came from

    Hi JAIdons,

    Thank you for your post.

    According to the description of your problem, you cannot use Visual Studio after you upgraded to Service Pack 1.

    Could you please let me know whether you installed any other version of Visual Studio 2010 products? For example: Express.

    Which way did you upgrade your Visual Studio 2010 to Service Pack 1? Using web installer or using iso file?

    Here is my own suggestion:

    ·         Download the iso file from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=75568aa6-8107-475d-948a-ef22627e57a5

    Note: the iso file link is under Instructions.

    ·         When you begin to install it, I advise you to disable your anti-virus software and security software.

    ·         Please run the setup file with Administrator privileges: Right-click the installer > Run as administrator.

    If I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

    Not sure if you tried Alexander's suggestion I like you ran into this problem today, like you I had it working for months. In fact I had VS Ultimate + SP1 working for over a month till I decided to get a larger hard drive and do some general clean up which meant reinstalling everything.

    Have you by change DOWNLOADED the Windows 7 Phone tools? I believe this to be the issue; let me explain

    If you do as I did today:

    Install VS RTM, VS SP1 and _then_ the Phone tools

    I  believe this will break with the error you saw. This in any event happened to me. Its slightly more complicated though if you install SP1 from DVD doesn't matter if its downloaded from MSDN or you have the offical DVD it does not include VS Express.

    The Phone Tools will install the WM7 Add-in for VS Express even if you have DevStudio installed at least thats what I seen in AppWiz.cpl.

    When you use the link below the Web install includeds VS Express. The dialog box also mentions it will be updating WM7 Addin's which I didn't see with the DVD install.

    This solved the problem which is what Alexander is saying below. I have no idea whether there are other permutation you can get into this same fracas.

    Needless to say I'm not at all pleased that the WM7 Tools group didn't run through this scenario in their testing. There really aren't that many base cases they needed to test

    Clean => VS Express+WM7 tools+Updates

    VS 2010 => WM7 tools+Updates =>VS 2010 SP1

    VS 2010 => VS 2010 SP1  => WM7 tools+Updates <<< This breaks.

    Here are a couple of other people which had similar problems or at least I think the threads may be useful for others that bump into this

    Here is one that Aaron Stebner/Heath Stewart two people which know more about Windows Install and VS in particular than anyone has a right to :)

    Hi JAldons,

    I'm posting to follow up your question, has this issue resolved? Are there any updates?

    According to the error message you received, there are several things I would like to clarify with you:

    • Did you have multiple Visual Studio 2010 version installed in your system?
    • Did you install an other version of Visual Studio 2010 product after installing VS 2010 SP1?

    Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will upgrade all editions and languages of Visual Studio 2010 you have already installed. If you install any other editions or languages of Visual Studio 2010 after SP1, you must reapply SP1. Please see: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=75568aa6-8107-475d-948a-ef22627e57a5

    If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Hi Andrew,

    Sorry I haven't been back to reply - unfortunately I was unable to resolve the problem and ended up rebuilding my machine. I believe the root cause may have been that I had a VSPremium and some office 97 stuff that was uninstalled and caused the issues.

    To answer your questions, I had already tried both the iso and the web installer - both had the same results. I didn't have phone 7 as Galen Dog suggested...

    Further investigation led me to believe there was some windows installer issues with some office/.net components not installing or uninstalling correctly (not being able to find the msi) and after manually fixing several of them, I just gave up as I was going around in circles - it was definitely the SP1 install that made the problems appear but i think there was corruption in my install anyway, it just wasn't visible as I wasn't making use of the corrupt components.

    I am experiencing similar behavior after installing the windows phone SDK.  After I installed the windows phone SDK on my Visual Studio 2010 Professional i got the message

    "

    Only some of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 products on this computer have been upgraded to Service Pack 1, None will work correctly until all have been upgraded."

    After

    1. Attempting the upgrade several times

    2. Uninstalling Visual Studio 2010 Express and Visual Studio 2010 Professional and reinstalling them both

    I am still getting the same message.

    Any ideas?

    I just experienced this issue and attempted multiple things including updates and reinstalls - initially to no avail. Now I seem to have solved the problem by doing a reapply( reinstall) of the VS 2010 SP1 on my laptop, but the difference this time is that I right clicked on the setup.exe and chose "Run As Admin". Thus even though my user account has admin privileges on my laptop, specifying to Run as admin was crucial.

    In general, with all the things I attempted, in my estimation, some of the Windows Updates  and / or hotfixes associated with VS 2010 that are installed after SP1 is installed do not properly account for what is truly there - either as registered (i.e. the registry) or what the updates / fixes look for - which implies that things get overwritten. So doing the reinstall / reapply via the "run as admin" ensures that the proper files are written and the error goes away. Others can chime in, but this is an issue and MS needs to definitively resolve and post a proper resolution as people are still experiencing, and I can find no clear solution.
