Is it possible to change the tile style to the new Metro style for legacy icons in the Start page, rather than the old icon in the corner of the tile, or even get the tile to display the large icon of the desktop program???

No, the official Engineering 8 blog mentioned that users were confused when desktop applications weren't visually different from Metro style Live Tiles. There is some indication that the current design for older applications will be reworked somewhat before it is finalised.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's confusing, mind you at first glance to someone that wasn't used to the Metro interface, I could see why, it just looks untidy, out of place.. That is a shame though! Even if they had the legacy icon image as a large icon in the middle of the tile, with the application name in the bottom right, it would look somewhat better.. But that's just my opinion, let's hope they take some ideas on board. :)

Anyone knows if this has been changed in the final release?

I would like to be able to define the icon for the Metro Start Page for my desktop app during installation.

The exact appearance of the tiles has changed, but there is no API for desktop apps to customize their tiles.
