Cannot install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express (x86)
- Hello,
I recently downloaded Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition iso image and burned it to a DVD. From the DVD, I proceeded to install Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, and I checked the check-box to install the SQL server. Once the installation completed, I received a Windows Error dialog wanting to send an error report. I sent the report.
On the installation screen, I recieved this:
Setup Complete!
Setup could not install the following component:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition (x86)
I had the same result for each of the products in the Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition package
(Visual Web Developer Express Ed., Visual C++ Express Ed., Visual Basic Expess Ed., and Visual C# Express Ed.)
I am running Windows XP with SP3 installed. How can I get the SQL Server to install? I also tried to manually download and install it from Microsoft.com, and I received the same result.
Thank you for your time in helping me with my issue!

Uninstall WindowsXP SP3 and then install the package. Once this is done update XP with Sp3.
- I had exactly same error message and I am on XP SP2
- This does not work!

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition (x86)Have you tried to search the summary.txt or the install log of your Sql Server Express ?
I think you could dig the exact reason inside them
I would suggest you
- to install for example the Visual Studio Express Edition package without Sql Server Express
- to apply the VS Express Edition SP1 on your computer
- to reboot the computer
- to try to install Sql Server Express 2008 (complete) after the reboot
If you have a problem, search the install log files, you may find the reason of the failure ( post the summay.txt, it is not easy to read it )
Have a nice day
Two issues for me:
(1) Exactly the same issue on the bad server install ... please be clearer on how to fix it, for the novice, or direct me to someone who can, please.
(2) I cannot launch the progs from my start menu, as I have hundreds of links, there, and the links to the suite are off-screen (I guess).
How do I start each of the four progs, from their directories (I can then build my own shortcuts ....why they are not created, by default, I have no idea) please?)
VV
Hello,
The summary.txt is located in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
C: is the system drive
Could you post it ? ( at least the part where there are errors )
Without it, it is impossible to help you
Inside this summary.txt, there are several parts corresponding to all features you wanted to install
For example, i have kept one summary.txt in error
Feature: Reporting Services
Status: Échec : voir les journaux pour plus de détails
MSI status: Échec : voir les détails ci-dessous
MSI error code: 0xEA235729
MSI log file location: E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20081128_155826\sql_engine_core_shared_Cpu32_1.log
MSI error description:
Configuration status: RéussiteFeature: Integration Services
Status: Réussite
MSI status: Réussite
Configuration status: Réussitein this example, Reporting Services could not be installed ( on contrary of Integration Services )
in red , you will see the MSI log file location ( don't try to post it : too big )
open it in wordpad and do a search with "error"
post the 10 lines before and after the error
We need this information to try to help you more efficiently
For your question 2), you have too many programs.I know that is a "bad" solution , are you sure that you need so many programs ?
start
all programs
i have around 50 programs in an only one colum so i can easily access to each one
What is the resolution of the screen ? ( for me 1280*1024 )
We are waiting for your feedback to try to help you
Have a nice day
PS: have you installed VS 2008 SP1 ?
if you have no VS Express 2008, you use :
you use the same link for upgrade to SP1 if you have already installed a VS Express 2008 without SP1
The rule from the PSS group is :
to install Sql Server 2008
and afterwards to install VS 2008 ( express or not )
You must install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 before everything
TY for your kind help.
My number of progs is unavoidable.
I will follow all your instructions tmrw, TY.
However, after clearing out a lot of MS rubbish, this is now where I am, following an online install of VWD 2008 Express :
http://www.gcmlotdr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tech/Screenshot%20-%2008_12_2008%20,%2020_43_13.jpg
So, I really do not know what the problem is, or how to continue (at least I did not get this error, earlier today). If I have .net 3.5 SP1 'working' do I have to any lower versions working, because I have problems there too, with errors on install?
TY
VV
Could someone please direct me to somewhere, where I can get detailed instructions on removing all .net components and the MS software which depends on it?
I have tried, but it says other programs need them - so what? I will reinstall them. Also, it goes looking for files, which I have manually deleted, and then says it cannot go any further and cannot uninstall.
I guess it means delving into the registry, but that is OK, so long as I have instructions.
I have paid for ASP.NET 2.0 provision, on a server, and cannot yet use it, because I cannot install the MS software (or uninstall all the MS rubbish to make a fresh start).
I really do not want to carry out a full Windows install.
Please direct this to another area, if that would be more useful.
Your help is much appreciated.
VV
(XP Home)- "Please direct this to another area, if that would be more useful."
Or where I can post it, please.
VV Do you have any anti-virus or anti-spyware installed on this machine?
Having said that from the above I see you have problem with installation of VS2008 and SQL2008 Express too, is it so?
- I have turned of all such progs, to no effect.
I have used dotnetfx_cleanup_tool, which 'did not fail'.
I then installed .net 2.0 - no apparent problems.
I then tried to install .net 3.0 and got this:
http://www.gcmlotdr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tech/Screenshot - 09_12_2008 , 16_04_01.jpg
http://www.gcmlotdr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tech/Screenshot - 09_12_2008 , 16_04_37.jpg
I can install 3.5, with no apparent problems, however, when I try to install WVD 2008 express, again, I get the failure, as described in the post, above.
Which version of SQL2008 Express should I be using for my AMD Athlon 2500+ (XP Home SP3)?
TY
VV - I am using SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.
It launches, does all the system checks, which pass, and then fails at the Installation/Product Key, License Terms, Setup Support Files (it gave this error at each in stage ... the grayed-out option is the Express version) with:
http://www.gcmlotdr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tech/Screenshot - 09_12_2008 , 17_36_33.jpg
Can someone PLEASE tell me where to go to get an answer?
PLEASE?
VV
Add: OK ... I may have solved this one - hold.
Installed: Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable
Add: No, SQLEXPR_x86_ENU failed again, with same error. Hello,
I found this link which ( i hope ) will help you to find the real error which forbids the install
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702.aspx
Please, could you post the lines surroundind the errors ?
It would be easier for us to explain you from where the error(s) is(are) coming ?
Be careful, an error may hide another error ( i know it from my last install of Sql Server 2008 Dev )
I hope you will give us news from your errors
Have a nice day
- TY ... I am afraid the information is just as before:

It seems it is a known problem and not easy to fix ...there is something relating to it here:
http://www.avianwaves.com/Blog/default.aspx?id=98&t=Mystery-of-the-SQL-Server-2008-RTM-MsiGe
and here ..
http://sqlskills.com/blogs/conor/post/SQL-2008-CTP6-installation-DOA.aspx
from
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3841960&SiteID=17
and from
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=MsiGetProductInfo+failed+to+retrieve+ProductVersion+for+package+with+Product+Code+&btnG=Search&meta=
I hope that helps? Do I try and do what the first guy did (Avian Waves)?
On the VS 2008 Express install (from 'DVD'), all items installed (except SQL 2008 Express - obviously and the errors were the same for VWD 2008 Express, as given in my first error graphic).
TY
VV - I just successfully uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 Service Pack 1. There were no problems there.
However, no change in the SQL Server 2008 Express fault.
VV - I am now cleaning out what I can with WICU.
VV - No changes from that.
I am surprised that any MS works.
VV - I have put a post, here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=4227564&SiteID=1&mode=1
VV - No replies were forthcoming.
XP repair did not solve the problems.
Full XP install did.
TY for help provided.
VV - My summary.txt file is as shown below.Plz help me out of this problem!
