Answered Bad reference to parent site

    Hi everybody,

    I have unfortunately not found any topic related to this issue, so let me explain what's wrong:

    I created a template from an existing site, and used it to move it to another parent site (bad). My main mistake was to delete the template afterwards... (very bad) Indeed, I lost all site columns and file types I had created. This could be easily recreated fortunately.

    However, I have also noticed my susbsite's reference to its parent site had not changed. When I check Sharepoint 2010 breadcrumb, it still shows the old/wrong parent site. In the same way, clicking "Go to top level settings" in site settings drives me directly to the top-site instead of the new "Library" parent-site.

    My old site tree:

    * Home
      + Adm
      + Bus
      + Qual

    My new site tree:

    * Home
      +Library
         - Adm
         - Bus
         - Qual

    Curiously, every single new site I create under "Library" inherits from the same behaviour. I have tried to find the parent site reference directly in the database, without success.

    Does anybody have a clue about how I could fix my bad prent-site references?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hello Antoine,

    It looks like you created a template from "Home" site and used it to create "Library" site. If this is correct, then "Home" is the site collection (aka root site or top level site) and "Library" is a subsite. "Adm", "Bus" and "Qual" are subsites of subsite "Library" and hence its a correct behavior that clicking "Go to top level settings" in site settings will take you to directly to the top-site and not the immediate parent site.

    About the breadcrum: Generally if you browse to a subsite of subsite and look at the Breadcrum, it will show you links only from the current site/subsite. However the navigate up button will show you the entire hierarchy. If you need to change the navigation for certain site/subsite, it can be done from Site Settings > Navigation.

    Dear Nishant,

    Thank you a lot for this answer. Actually I was wrong about the "Go to top level settings" link, the behaviour you describe is indeed the expected one.

    However, my navigate up button is still wrong. It ignores the "Library" site and considers "Home" as the direct parent site of "Qual", "Adm" and "Bus". See picture below:

    As a Sharepoint Foundation user I can unfortunately not change the Navigation. I will search CodePlex and try to find something that suits my needs. If you have any other suggestion, I always prefer to do things myself rather than installing solutions.

    Hello Antoine,

    Yes, if you have SharePoint foundation then you wont see the change navigation link.
    Can you please browse to one of the subsite i.e. "Qual". Take a screenshot of address bar and take a screenshot after clicking navigate up button and post here?

    Hi,

    Try exporting the site out and then importing it into a new location.  Check the behavior of the breadcrumb and Nav UP functionality.

    Sure, here it is:

    http://intranet/Library/Quality/default.aspx

    As you can see it does not correspond.

    Unfortunately I have already done that without success using Powershell.

    Created a new site, exported my subsite and reimported it into the new site. The navigation is still wrong.

    I know this topic is old, but I would like to add an information after solving my issue.

    I have fixed it by recreating my sites and reimporting my libraries instead. It was time consuming but worked fine. However, I have noticed I could reproduce this unwated behaviour simply by stopping the Top Link bar inheritance, which would show the same wrong hierachy when clicking "Navigate Up".

    So, if anyone faces the same issue, please make sure the Top link bar inheritance is enabled :)
    The problem was probably way simpler than it looked.

    Thanks for the heads up tOni0, I had the exact same problems as you.

    went to site settings->Navigation

    changed Global navigation to Display the navigation items below the current site hit OK, went back to navigation and reverted  to Display the same navigation items as the parent site  and everything worked as it should.

    SharePoint has been a humbling experience.
