Sharepoint Zones

Question

Hi,

Could anyone explain to me how Sharepoint zones work and how should I proceed to implement this or Do you have any good links about this?

Hi

If its due to multiple authentication mechanisms you are thinking about zones then you don't have to use multiple zones with 2010 http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brporter/archive/2010/05/10/temp.aspx

Zones is just another door or entry to SharePoint - You need to extend web application to create new zone. The reason for extending could be anything like having different config settings for different users etc.

Dear SPKabethy,

Assuming you've got basic understanding of SharePoint Administration 2010. Let me give you an example when we may need to have a different zone in a same web application. Your company, which is the manufacturing company, is using SharePoint as a intranet portal which connects all people to work together in a place where documents, information, content are regularly shared across in which. However, after using 6 months, you, as an IT manager, realize that your company needs to collaborate with partner, vendors which will connect to your system from outsider. From this case, you will extend your Web application using Extranet zone. After that, you will may consider federation service deployment using ADFS or custom identity application.

The term "Zone" was described by Microsoft Technet: "Zones represent different logical paths (URLs) of gaining access to the same Web application. Within each Web application, you can create up to five zones using one of the available zone names: Default, Intranet, Internet, Custom, or Extranet. Each name can only be selected once per Web application. Each zone is represented by a different Web site in IIS."

The Default zone is the zone that is first created when a Web application is created. The other zones are created by extending a Web application.

SharePoint zones are a way to categorize the source locations from where client requests emit.  All are based on an IP address, URL or domain name.  Instead, these sources are defined more broadly, such as intranet, extranet, internet.  Don't equate zones with authentication providers, though you can make a direct association.
