Video playback (IE10) - "invalid source" error message

    Question

  • I'm seeing the error message "invalid source" in one of the mp4 videos on my ASP.NET website.

    The URL seems correct - if I right-click the player and copy-paste the video URL into a new tab, Windows Media Player loads and plays the video.

    When I use the developer console, I see a 304 (Not modified) response for the video under the Network tab, but its Type is empty.

    Here's my code:

            <video class="appVideo" controls width="300" height="300">
                <source src="/Videos/kittenlabs_weathertribes_video.mp4" type="video/mp4" />
                <source src="/Videos/kittenlabs_weathertribes_video.ogg" type="video/ogg"/>
                <img src="/Videos/kittenlabs_weathertribes_animation.gif" />
            </video>

    Would appreciate some help in clarifying why and how I can solve the issue.

  • Hi,

    but its Type is empty....

    check your server's mime-type mapping for mp4 files.

  • Thanks for the reply...

    I've added

        <staticContent>
          <remove fileExtension=".mp4" />
          <mimeMap fileExtension=".mp4" mimeType="video/mp4" />
          <mimeMap fileExtension=".ogg" mimeType="video/ogg"/>
        </staticContent>

    to my web.config (.mp4 was mapped to audio/mp4), but for some reason the Type is still empty...

    Update: Needed to clear the browser's cache and refresh the page. The video now loads and the mimeTYpe shows up correctly.

  • Hi,

    can you supply a link to your website or the file on your server please?

    or

    use the network tab of IE's developer tool to inspect the mime-type returned from your server.

    thx.

  • The network tab of IE's developer tool returned a 304 response (Not modified) with an empty mime-type for the video.

    Here's the link to my website: http://shuen-yuan.com. If you click on the last icon (Weather Tribes), it will bring you to the details page with the video where the "invalid source" error message appears - would appreciate your help on this...

  • http://shuen-yuan.com/Home/Apps/1

    http://shuen-yuan.com/Videos/kittenlabs_cloningkitten_video.mp4

    &

    http://shuen-yuan.com/Videos/kittenlabs_weathertribes_video.mp4

    has the correct mime-type.

    Please post the full address of your page (copy and paste from the IE address bar)

    or

    Right click on the video element and select copy video url from the context menu.

    Neither of those pages are using asp.net (they are vanilla html pages, so there are no asp.net UAS sniffing issues)

    thx.

  • It's going to sound a bit silly... but the video loaded after I cleared the browser's cache and refreshed the page. I guess it was resolved after mapping the mimeType on the server.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Make sure you set the web server to use MINE type video/mp4 for .mp4. I accidentally set .mp4 to use MINE type video/mpeg, the video plays in Chrome, but not in IE11.

    Also you need to make sure the video uses H264 video codec and AAC audio codec
