    Hi,

I am getting an error when opening the ssms in sql server 2008 R2. Tried all the comments in msdn forums and googled a lot and finally no luck. Some one has to help me out to get this issue fixed.

Installed sql server 2008 r2 sp1 and sp2. Still no luck.

" the proper type library could not be found in the system registry" is the error message.

    Thanks
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,

Looks like .NET 3.5 libaries are corrupt. I suggest you do the following:

    1) Launch Control Panel and then Add Remove Programs.

    2) Locate .NET 3.5, choose uninstall and then restart your server

    3) After restart, re-install .NET 3.5 or above and then all reinstall all client tools.

    4) Restart server and hopefully the problem will disappear.

    Hi Basit,

I am using .NET 4. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall that?

    Hi Rahulreigns,

Cause: There was a permissions issue in the registry.
Resolution: correcting registry permissions so you could open SSMS. Change the ownership in the parent folder in registry. Give full control to local admin.

    Thanks,
    Maggie

    Hi Maggie,

Could you please specify the correct registry i should give permission to. coz, I gave full permission to all the parent folders and still no luck.

If you could give me the correct registry subfolder, it will be much helpful.

    Thanks

    Rahul

    Hi Rahulreigns,

Please launch SQL Server Setup Program to repair the SQL Server 2008 R2 instance.

When you repair an instance of SQL Server:
All missing or corrupt files are replaced.
All missing or corrupt registry keys are replaced.
All missing or invalid configuration values are set to default values

    How to repair: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646006(v=SQL.105).aspx.

    Thanks,
    Maggie

Let us know if you see the same issue with SQL 2012. You can download Evaluation edition from here  http://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/pd/SQL2012EvalCTA/enus/default.aspx

    Hi Sethu Srinivasan,

I installed sql server 2012 express edition with advance services after uninstalling sql server 2008 R2 and this time another issue popped up. When I click New Query in management studio, it returns an error as shown below :

" Library not registered. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8002801D (TYPE_E_LIBNOTREGISTERED)) "

SQL issues are freeking me out. Hope some one can put an end to this. Microsoft guys, you have to seriously look in to this.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

It look like a permission issue, could you try to "run as Administrator" to repaire SQL 2008 R2?
