16 April 2012 16:09Can I upgrade only the PowerPivot 2008 R2 instance (running stand alone on a front end server) without upgrading my SQL server to 2012 which is on a separate machine??? I cannot test this effectively so I need someone who has done it to let me know :)

Hi Challen,
Where can I find information on how to upgrade just PowerPivot for SharePoint?
Best regards,

All that you need to do is to obtain the SQL 2012 Media, and then install "PowerPivot for SharePoint" on one or more of your SharePoint Front end Servers. Then, run through the PowerPivot installation tool, and it will upgrade your current PowerPivot Instance.
In addition, if you want to use Reporting Services 2012, you can do the same thing, but choose Reporting Services for SharePoint from your Feature Installation.
Hope this helps
John

Is it possible in this case to use PowerPivot v2 (2012) for Excel with an existing Power Pivot v1 for SharePoint? Or will it occur to an error?

I get the same error when trying to run any reports after doing the upgrade. I have updated existing files and created new one with the same results. IT isn't as easy as you would try to say.
Deserialization failed: The INSERTELEMENTHERE element in the 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2011/engine/300/300' namespace is unexpected.

Hi Challen Fu,
REgarding the PowerPivot install: When we upgraded to new PowerPivot instance we encountered error while reading a PowerPivotXLS created using new version : HelloWorldPicnicModelPowerPivotTutorialRTM. The error was "related to PowerPivot Version" . When I checked I found MSOLAP 10.0 and MSOLAP 11 sitting together in the folder.
Any insight?
thanks
Vijay
