can't install 2012 express x86 on windows server 8?

error:

Rule "Edition WOW64 platform" failed.

SQL Server Setup is not supported in WOW64.  This setup program can be run only on a 32-bit system.

So, am i understanding this correctly? SQL Server 2012 Express x86 can be installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, but not on Windows Server 8?

i wasn't able to get the express installers to work, but i was able to install express x86 on server 8 from the sql 2012 full iso, selecting "x86" in options (can't do that with the x64 express installer, and the x86 express installer gives the wow64 error)

for posterity:

i had somehow downloaded the "SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe" file instead of "SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe".  "SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe" is intended to install only on 32 bit systems, hence the error message.
