WebsitePanel 1.2.2 planning

Semua Balasan

  • I think it might be good to quickly follow up all the Microsoft products.

If WebsitePanel could offer CRM 2011, Lync 2010, Navision, SharePoint 2010 (also user & group management), SQL2012, ... and always the latest releases. WebsitePanel will be a panel with lots of possibilities in Microsoft SaaS environments and can strengthen it position with other automation providers. It's not easy to get everything right but it might be worth to give it a try?

Why focus on Microsoft products? for all the other products that WebsitePanel supports are more alternatives with other panels then there are for Microsoft products, certainly because it's open source!

  • I think the most needed functionality at the moment is the ability to migrate customers to other servers easily. In cpanel this is really simple, even for multiple accounts.

  • Hi Guys,

My big one at the moment is IPv6 addresses - my datacenter is offering them but I can't use them. Would be great if we could get this started.

The next one is some simple (well to me anyhow) software updates. For example the mySQL Connector is so far out of date you can't even download it anymore.

I do also agree with Sam we really need the migration tool for me most of my servers are still Win2K3 boxes and I would love to be able to offer an upgrade to some of my older customers that we with us when this was DNP to a nice W2K8 IIS7 service which will then allow me to offer the features that some of them are asking for without the headache of deleting the account and having to recreate it on a new server then uploading their content again which is also made more complicated if they have a database.

Well thats my thoughts anyhow, I'm sure I'll think of something else later.

  • The most needed functionality that everyone will benefit from:

    • Ability to recycle the application pool.
    • Windows Server 8 Support.
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 support.
    • Ability to migrate customers to other servers easily.
    • Policy to NOT allow user to unchecked "Dedicated app pool".
    • Do we really need both the "Web Publishing" tab and "Management" tab in website properties? I think both tabs can be merged into one tab.

  • Things I am already working on:

    1. Better management of Public Folder Security on Exchange, allow editing of Authors, Owners, Editors.

    2. Roles Security to allow for a more graniluar secuirty structure per peer (enable blocking of deleting things, turn off access to hosted space edit details for control of add-ons

    3. Connectwise Agreement/Invoice Integration with Hosting Space Add-Ons (Billing Support)

    4. Lync Module (Might be donated by a provider that already has it functioning)

    5. Exchange Mailbox Plan Support (Might be donated by a provider that already has it functioning)

    Feodor,

DNS SRV Record is important, it supports the creation of auto-discover zones for exchange so that they dont need to be manually created when using MS-DNS.

  • I knew there was something else...

...we need the ability to assign a static IP Address to a hosting space without having to remove it and recreate it. I could be wrong but I'm sure that was an issue back along. I've not done an SSL site for a while now.

  • Hello,

I would like to see the scheduler updated in reference to running only one time per event, some times with the prior releases the scheduler would sometimes repeat a trigger two or three times.  Now this is much less frequent, just wondered if there is a way to make sure the event only triggers once per schedule.

    Thanks,

  • Here are my top 3
    • Windows Server 8 Support, along with IIS8, and Asp.Net 4.5 support with support for all new features upcoming
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 support. ( can there be in the future a way to get these provider updates during beta so when products go live we are prepared)
    • Fix file manager to delete locked files our clients always are opening tickets complaining they cant delete a few files. I know it is not really a WSP issue but possibly you can find a way to make the files delete even if locked.

  • Everyone,

I have gone through the codeplex issue tracker and identified most of the issues that exist there. Some of your requests have not been submitted to the issue tracker. I request that each of you above check the issue tracker at code plex and make sure that all of the issues above exist there. Moving forward this will be where we decide which features will be included in the future release. If your Items do not exist in the issue tracker and you would like them to be included in future releases, please add them, I receive a daily digest of all code plex issue tracker items and will take it upon myself to review your entries and organize them for the community. If you create any of the above and want them to be considered for 1.2.2 please post back the work item numbers to this post and I will plan them in either this up and coming release or later. rsolezel those two forks were never documented against the issues in the issue tracker so Feodor really doesnt connect one with the other, I will bring those two forks up I agree they need to be merged in if they are working properly.

I have put together a list of all the items above that exist and have assigned them to the next release of 1.2.2. As a community I am suggesting that we all look to July 31st as the target date for the next release. If you follow this link you can all review the items that we are all voting for to be included.

    http://websitepanel.codeplex.com/workitem/list/advanced?keyword=&status=Open%2b%28not%2bclosed%29&type=All&priority=All&release=1.2.2&assignedTo=All&component=All&sortField=Votes&sortDirection=Descending&page=0

I would also ask all of you to contribute! We need to remember, Websitepanel is open source, what this means is that we all need to work together to acheive these goals, they will not occur on their own, this is no longer a commercial product, there is nobody on the other end that will do this work for us. Feodor has been amazing in his support over the last couple of months, but we need to be realistic about our expectations of him. Also, if you review the code inclusions from 1.2.1, most of them were community contributions, feodor simply integrated them together for us. Any of you in the community that have some of these fixes already developed (And I know most of them are out there), it would be great if you can open a fork and upload them to us. If any of you have time to tackle any of the open work items, also let us know that you intend to do so, and give us a timeline for the code to be delivered to us so we know whats coming.

I know nobody has time, neither do I but this project will not work unless we all are thinking this way.

If you have not formally set yourself up as a developer and need help doing that so that we can assign tasks and issues to you if you choose to develop, feel free to contact me through info@websitepanel.net and I will help you with the process myself. I also have developers available so if your not a programmer, but want to discuss contributing towards getting a work item completed I might also have the ability to help you with that as well, at least we can have a discussion. (This is something that I can personally do it's not an outercurve or websitepanel commitment, it is my own. If you commit to a work item I will get it assigned to you formally and track the delivery so that Feodor can integrate.

Our next step here is to get commitments from the community for specific code bits for the issues identified at the link above and set a more official timeline. If we can do this and release 1.2.2 by July 31st, then we are on our way in the right direction and everyone gets what they want, a greate panel!

I want to get the list locked down for 1.2.2 by 5/10/2012 so everyone please review and send me any work items you feel that need immediate inclusion and I will handle that. If you upload a fork that corrects a work item, add a comment to the work item with the URL of the fix so that Feodor can associate them and merge the code back in.

  • Server migration
I don't think the server backup is the best way to migration a server.
I think the best way is this:
Add a "Recreate" botton on the "Server Properties" page that can recreate all data on the new server.

It can recreate FTP users, websites, databases, mail accounts, then zip the E:\hostingspaces,database files by manual, copy to new server,Replace,Complete.

If you have any other idea, please reply!

  • Our bigest problem is DNS TTL's being reset to the default 24 hours everytime a user changes an IP address.  I would love two things to be updated.

    1.  Leave the TTL as it is when editing a DNS record.  At the moment changing an A records IP address resets the TTL to the default for that domain.

    2. The ability to change TTL's for DNS records.  User like to lower them when they know in advance thay they are going to change IP's as part of a migration and then returning them to the default afterwoods.

    Kind Regards,

  • Omar

Nobody is answering emails to that address. We have been continuously trying to get information on how we start with this proces.. We have employed a developer to look at a Lync module only to find out now that this is something that we potentially already have so we are duplicating effort and also probably wasting money. We have also posted messages to your website asking for information and have yet to have a response. Our first message was sent I think about 1 month ago. Could you please let us know how we can join in with these efforts. We were funding the Lync module ourselves and we were going to return this code to the community in order to drive this forward.

Could you please advise in regard to the Lync module and if it is being coded against the Lync Hosting Pack version of Lync as opposed to the on-premise version, they are very different. Our Dev is doing this for Lync Hosting pack compatability so this might not be a waste of time. If we can assist with this then we will.

    Thanks

  • There are 2 things i would like to see in 1.2.2 and they are:

    - System Center 2012 integration ( preferably VMM/CM and SCOM )
    - Integration with a large DNS provider here in the netherlands called Transip ( documentation is available at https://api.transip.nl/transapi_v3_0.tar.gz )

    13 Mei 2012 14:01
  • - Integration with a large DNS provider here in the netherlands called Transip ( documentation is available at https://api.transip.nl/transapi_v3_0.tar.gz )

I would suggest if you want something like this then you develop it yourself, as I suspect that is the only way you are likely to get such a feature considering the limited market, and that WSP already supports a number of far more popular DNS server systems. But that is the good thing about an open source project that you can add to it.

  • Currently WebsitePanel only references that it works with Alt-N Mdaemon 9.x-10.x

Mdaemon is currently at revision 12.5.6 so can we confirm proper functionality of version 11.x-12.x and update the site to reflect this.

    16 Mei 2012 16:41
  • Guys - I reached out to Mdaemon and asked them to help us update their providers directly and they have not responded. I am going to be suggesting that any provider not backed by their maker be removed eventually unless someone steps up to manage it. Kind of like sponsoring a highway, we are the highway and our users are the drivers. If Mdaemon wants our users to drive their cars they need to put in the help, it only benifits them. I would suggest calling Mdaemon, telling them that you rely on this project and that they should get involved. That way we can guarantee updates on the providers for years to come without community participation. So far I have Smartertools, Mailenable and RhinoSoft participating in this idea. Mailenable already provided updates and Smartertools and with Rhinosoft are scheduled for the end of the month at least thats what I have been told. We need to get more of the companies WSP works with involved. That will solve this on-going provider update issue.

So, Call Mdaemon, tell them how much you love WSP and that you think they need to play their part.

  • Few things:

SQL 2012 actually already worked quite well before (manual setup) atleast we did not encounter any issue with it a few weeks back during one of our tests.

    Secondary..

It seems FileZilla has obtained new issues since 1.2.1?

I have not seen anyone listing this but same as with Mailenable we had to put it in 32bit app pool to make FileZilla work for some reason? (would be great is MailEnable AND Filezilla both support it)

Besides that.. i would like WSP to go back to ASP.NET 4.0.. but i believe i made that one clear in different conversations ;-)

Third and not least.. Theme management should be improved as the current skin and theme management only has very little influence (alot of things like buttons, tables, etc are still in the source code instead of in the themes).

And a final comment on Omar's new approach:

Yes it is important to have those providers help out BUT you can not totally depend on them neither. Many software companies just gives API's to work with.. BUT leave it up to the people who wanna use it to integrate it. (like panels, websites, etc)

    Regards,

    Marco

  • I still don't see asp.net 4.0 over there..

Neither anything about theming improvements (as that’s a serious lack compared to any paid panels - In the end i can make a HTML5 responsive grid theme.. but i rather do the theme part and NOT recoding the source. which is what is necessary at this point of time).

How about Mailenable with 64bit app pool? (as that by default never works) i can see the 32bit app pool related stuff but nothing about 64bit one that actually never worked as long as i remember on 2008 R2 ;-)

also.. don't take it as an offence.. but when things are broken that used to work just fine.. isn't that a sign that the 1.2.1 update has been pushed out way to early?

Now i'm a fan of WSP and all.. but.. to be honest i never bothered to upgrade to 1.2.1 my self with all the issues it gained (while most of it all worked fine at 1.2.0)

That would be a consideration of better management for the future (if you ask me) ;-)

  • Forwarded your question on 64 bit to Mail Enable, as for the rest of the items, feel free to contribute the fixes and we will happily accept them if they correct the issues you describe. WSP will run in 4.0 framework, but has known bugs with Enterprise Modules, if you prefer to run it in 4.0 feel free thats up to you. Right now the installer defaults to 4.0 not 2.0.

    Omar Armenteros Virtuworks

    18 Mei 2012 0:50
  • Well i'm not a coder.. i only know basic's which is not enough to fix much WSP related issues.

We create by-passes.. like putting mailenable/filezilla etc in 32bit app pool and make WSP think it's a second server :P

my main point was "making 1 step forward and going 2 backwards".

as in.. releasing things too early.. where things that used to work are suddenly broken (filezilla is a good example which used to be click and run).

It's not meant as any kind of offence.. but it should be a good consideration on the management perspective how to prevent this from the next release (by.. maybe testing it longer.. not pushing it out too quickly? etc).

  • Received an answer from Mail Enable. Your 64 Bit issue has been resolved on this work item.

    http://websitepanel.codeplex.com/workitem/96

On the rest of your comment, I was not a member of that team, niether is most of the current members working on the project so I guess we will never know what they were thinking (Feodor just rejoined at the end of last year). Our current release date for 1.2.2 is end of July, we beleive that's plenty of time. If you cant contribute with coding, we could use all the testers we can get so that the release is bullet proof like you want it to be. I use the latest beta, I have zero issues so I am not sure what you mean with everything is broken, when it's actually the opposite.

    Omar Armenteros Virtuworks

    18 Mei 2012 1:10
  • Hmm.. that work item refers to 32bit system not 64..

    Look my issue:

Windows 2008 R2 --> by default uses 64Bit app pool.

Mailenable (atleast last time i checked) does not work with that.. if you create mail accounts or domains --> it creates nothing (with no error neither).

The fix: moving Mailenable to 32bit App pool (under a seperated "WSP Server" as WSP it self doesn't like 32bit app pool.. atleast it didn't before with the Web app issue.. but that one is being fixed i saw ;-))

I also didn't say nothing is working.. but for example for exchange you recommended switching to asp.net 2.0 (while in 1.2.0 asp.net 4.0 works perfect) Filezilla that stopped working properly and some other small issues we crossed ;-)

I can test no problem.. i also gave pavel VM's to test on in the past aswell.

also as mentioned i can make themes (which i already contributed 2 of them) tho the functionality doesn't even allow javascript to function after the login page (which makes the themes still old fashion and no where near modern.. so theming needs better function on the coding level inorder to make the design up to a modern standard like HTML5 Responsive grid).

Also i contribute most by spending a little time everyday on the forum to help folks with issues ;-)

Anyways.. it will be my last reply on this topic as it feels a bit like hijacking this discussion :-)

Feel free to mail me at m.tiggelaar (at) key4ce.eu so we can chat some more if you want.

    Key4ce - IT professionals: www.key4ce.eu

  • The issue is definetly fixed, the work item is not correctly described. Mailenable confirms it. If you test 1.2.2 and it does not work let us know. You should no longer have to use your work around according to them.

The Exchange Module will work exactly the same as it does in 1.2.0 (which is broken even though you say you cant replicate the issue I can confirm it exists, you must not be using the parts that fail), again use how you like. The only changes that have been introduced are the items needed to enable address book policy in SP2. If you feel that it works fine for you, then use it in 4.0. I can confirm it does not work 100% configured that way. The fix for this, which is converting exchange integration via Remote Powershell rather than the local shell is high on my to do list as it is required for WSP to be fully compliant with Exchange Multi-Tenant Support.

at admin level, choose which users to back up and restore. Like directadmin can do very simple.

  • I believe Matt Crook  has been involved with Mdaemon and its workings with WebsitePanel.  I believe he has confirmed version 11.x definitely works and even 12.x works with a slight trick of upgrading 11.x to 12.x without telling websitepanel so it doesn't warn about not recognizing verison.

  • I can confirm the same things as Vazoom mentions with mysql, mssql, and even the mysql connector. (tho the last one requires telling web config to look for the newer one).

    Hereby a suggestion:

Instead of "Only supporting" certain technologies and versions.. i would still give the option for people to use (and configure) unsupported versions of for example mssql (without sneakily upgrading to mssql 2012 in wsp 1.2.0 / 1.2.1.. or mysql 5.5 back when it only supported 5.1)

Maybe instead of just saying it doesn't support it (and then not allowing you to install).. just give a warning your installing an unsupported version.. and pretty much continue on your own risk?

In most cases i think WSP should become more flexible and less rigid (not just with what technologies it supports.. theming, language and many other things can use alot more flexibility if you ask me :-))

This is absolutely correct and modules should not be version specific, they should detect the version internally and provide functionality based on the  target software version available with the last available version of the module used for all future versions of the target software regardless.

This should also allow module functionality to be shared (were compatible) saving duplication of work in separate version based modules and making sure that older versions of modules are not left undeveloped like has been seen for older versions of the smartermail modules.

  • Omar,

This is Kevin Beatty with Alt-N Technologies, developer of MDaemon. I just ran across this request and we are willing to work with the WSP community. I just need more info to get this on the list with our developers. Can you email me directly (kevin.beatty@altn.com)?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  • Hi,

I know development is well under-way (and excited) but would be also nice in future to have a scheduled reporting similar to the Enterprise reporting. That works very well and helps with SPLA reporting.

Similar for the basic services would be amazing and could help control / manage over usage with resellers and providers without WHMSC or the like. Maybe get cumulative number of mailboxes per account / reseller same for web, ftp and databases

    Thoughts?

  • Hi,

    Another on MSDNS:

    1. Ability to change / update TTL

    2.  SRV change - but think this has been requested loads :)

    Thanks,

    Richard

  • Fix "remember me" login issue

server migration tools for moving domains between servers.

better theme support as Marco says it is very hard right now to change the theme much, in fact I have never seen any alternate themes for download anywhere. Really needs to be more web 2.0 using jquery and html 5

allow hosting plan/server property changes to be applied to existing spaces using those plans/servers.

better errors for debugging. when things fail there is often no error at all or the error is useless.
e.g. restoring databases: no error at all if it fails
           creating/deleting databases/users, useless error
creating mail user on smartermail, no error at all if it fails.
domains fail to create properly due to DNS issue, no useful error

unit testing, which would ensure things work properly and things that were working do not get broken.

eCommerce system, what can I say, it sucks badly and needs a lot of work, or better integration with WHMCS so that it isn't needed.

  • Everyone, any feature requests post them to Codeplex so that we have them all in one place =)

I just updated the Beta of 1.2.2 again with a couple of bug fixes. Let's try and clean up this release so that it's ready to go at the end of August. From a features point of view I am planning to integrate a new Smartermail 10 provider that will consolidate all providers into one, in addition to a new SERV-U provider provided by Rhinosoft, and a new M-Deamon provider provided by ALT-N. I think if we try and stick much more into this it wont be stable in time for release by then. Anyone that needs help with the Beta email info@websitepanel.net.

  • Since WebsitePanel user account passwords use to be changed though third party billing systems, such as WHMCS, in some circunstances, I would like to have this feature added in WebsitePanel 1.2.2 to avoid users to change their WebsitePanel account passwords and loss both products password syncronization.

    Best regards,

    Jorge.-

  • it would also be good if WHMCS actually integrated properly with WSP, rather than the current half arsed effort.

    i.e.

    • allowed adding/removing of add-ons
    • allowed multiple spaces under same user
    • supported VPS provisioning as well.

I have said this to WHMCS before, but their answer was "this module was not written by us, it was written by WSP developers so is their responsibility".
Perhaps all *ALL* WHMCS/WSP users sent them a request they might take more notice.

  • Hello,

Please make sure that you post the feature request at http://websitepanel.codeplex.com/workitem/list/basic

On this topic it seems someone already created the feature request: http://websitepanel.codeplex.com/workitem/336

So if you like the WHMCS ideas and/or want some extra features to it.. please vote there :-)

  • Hyper V Module must be update:

    1. Static MAC for IP.
    2. Dynamic Memory for VM
    3. Assigned VM to a Customer must not be showed again in the drop box until VM is unssigned to a customer.
    4. Slow refresh time to drop box of new machines. Sometimes never show some machines.

    HyperV module is outdated.
