unmanaged c++ and SqlServer PowerShell

Question

I'm working on a large unmanaged c++ app that relies heavily on sqlserver express. We're using 2008 R2. I understand that DMO has been deprecated and should not be used in new development. Is PowerShell the replacement for DMO? Can it be called from unmanaged code? Thanks, Vince W.

What I actually need to do is enumerate the sql server instances of a machine on the local network, once a machine has been selected by a user. I'm not finding an unmanaged alternative to DMO, might a possible workaround be to query the chosen network machine's registry and get the sql server instance name(s)/location(s) from there? What is the official Microsoft recommendation for my situation?
