Answered External access to SharePoint via Outlook Anywhere

    Hi, everybody.

For a SharePoint site to be made accessible via Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTPS) from the Internet, do I need to publish the SharePoint site via TMG or some other means?

The only intended access to this site from the Internet is via Outlook Anywhere, so I would like to spare the publishing if possible.  Please advice.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mario

The best practices in publishing Outlook, SharePoint and other internal staff... is to use UAG instread of TMG.

    Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/forefront/unified-access-gateway.aspx

    Hi, Valy.

Thanks for the info.  Good to know that UAG is preferred to TMG.  However, can I spare them both when using Outlook Anywhere?  Please advice.

I mean, provided Outlook Anywhere is already implemented (by whatever means, either TMG, UAG or otherwise), can I spare publishing the SharePoint site to provide Internet access to it via Outlook Anywhere exclusively?

    Thanks,

    Mario

Yes, most of time is recommendet to use a combination between TMG and UAG.

Here is an interesting article about combination: http://blogs.technet.com/b/schadinio/archive/2010/07/21/exchange-combining-web-farm-publishing-with-software-or-hardware-based-load-balanced-cas-arrays.aspx

Also, you must keep in mind that TMG is over right now... Microsoft will not produce anymore this product!

    Hi, Valy.

Thanks for your replies and the info regarding TMG lifecycle.

I'm afraid I haven't made myself clear enough.

Say you have a SharePoint site in your intranet which has not been published to the Internet.

On the other hand, Outlook Anywhere has been published and is working properly.

Can users access the SharePoint site from the the Internet by means of their Outlook Anywhere connection?  That is: does Outlook Anywhere somehow encapsulate the request to the SharePoint site and provide access to it although it is not published?

    Thanks

The answer is very simple: No

That's the way that I redirect you to few more details about configuration and internal SharePoint access from the Internet.
