I have been trying to create a custom task form from a custom content type on a workflow in SharePoint Designer 2010. I have copied the OTB workflow "Collect Feedback" and it works fine with a the default task content type that it generates.
Then when I modify the workflow to use my custom content type (created through SharePoint UI) I get an error when I try to publish the workflow. My custom content type has 2 custom columns added to it.
SharePoint Designer 2010 error says "SharePoint Designer encountered error generating task form".
No content type is created after this error appears and the workflow is not published correctly.
The workflow published normally until I added the custom content type. There are no errors on the content type in SharePoint UI and I can create tasks based on it in a Task list.
Why does this error occur?

How do you change the workflow to use the custom content type ?
Custom content type created in UI is different than the content type created from workflow .So I would suggest modifying the content type created by the workflow to include more columns rather than changing the content type to another one . Click on Collect Feedback Workflow Task to edit task form fields .Here you can add custom column to the content type created or you can add existing site columns .Thanks

When I add custom site columns to the workflow content type I see the following:
1. Add 2 site columns to the Task Forms section.
2. Click Save -> error "Could not save the field changes to the server. Unknown Error"
3. Both fields that were added disappear.
4. Try to save again -> error attached.
5. Try to save again -> no error but does not save.
