SDL Threat Model Has Issues Starting up

Question

When I load the model I created either after start up or by clicking on the stored file the SDL Threat Model tool has intermittent start up issues. When its starts and runs it seems stable but many times it just starts the load process and disappears. Sometime it loads and then when I attempt to go full screen it dies. I got another pop screen while trying to recover when given that option after I restarted the tool after it closed when loading my file. I could not cut and paste the opo up here but below is my typed entry of what it says;

For the first issue we will issue an update.

 

The issues with Visio protected memory etc. were observed by others when PC is running for a long time and Visio internals get to the corrupted state. It is a heap corruption that leads to this issue. The reboot usually clears that out; we do not accept that as a viable solution though and will keep you updated with our findings.

Nevertheless, please try to reboot your PC. Also, how long has it been since the last reboot?

I'm also running into this problem, using SDLTM 3.1.8 with Visio 2010 on 32-bit Wndows 7 Enterprise, sometimes with an alert popup and sometimes without one.  There are various texts that are displayed in the popups.

Once this starts occurring, it pretty much occurs every time I start SDLTM.  While rebooting clears the supposedly corrupt memory, it doesn't necessarily take more than a single file to be accessed before the problem recurs.

Is there a timeframe for providing a fix?  Are there specific combinations of software versions that cause this to occur?  Would replacing Visio 2010 with Visio 2007 be expected to avoid the problem?  How about switching to the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

I was running into near-constant startup crashes of the 3.1.8 tool with Visio 2010 installed (plus Visio 2013) on Win7 64-bit Enterprise while loading a colleague's .SDL file.

I was able to workaround my startup crash by opening Visio 2010, launching the SDL tool without opening the problem .SDL file, making some simple updates to the default .SDL file and saving them to a dummy file, then opening my colleague's .SDL file.

I can't say this workaround works 100% of the time, but it broke me out of my constant-crash loop.
