Installing Visual Studio 11 on Windows 8 w/o Developer Tools
-
jeudi 15 septembre 2011 03:52I installed Windows 8 from a disk a friend made that did not have the developer tools. Is there any way to install them separately?

jeudi 15 septembre 2011 03:57If you have a MSDN Suscription, you can download almost every developer apps like SDK, If you don't have MSDN Suscription, you have to download the entire ISO file from Microsoft web page for Windows 8 with Dev Tools.

There are three different Windows 8 Developer Preview images that are available for download from the Windows Dev Center portal (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516):
- 64-bit build with sample Metro-style apps and development tools
- 64-bit build with sample Metro-style apps but no development tools
- 32-bit build with sample Metro-style apps but no development tools
It appears your friend downloaded one of the last two images. If you have a 64-bit system you can install on, just go to the link above and download the image you want.

That's right, if you don't have MSN Subscription, you have to download the image.
It's because those tools are developed to work just for Windows Developer Preview, maybe when they become RTM too will be available in a separate download.- Marqué comme réponse Andrew James Gaspar jeudi 15 septembre 2011 04:38

Hi Andrew,
so you might have read this already, you can install the them separately but to develop the new Metro style applications you'll need to download the Windows Developer Preview with developer tools at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516
Developers have been seeing the error
Tool makepri.exe cannot be found. Please install Windows Modern SDK
Here is a more complete answer on the downloads available which describes how the Windows Modern SDK is only available in the full Windows Developer Preview with developer tools download. there are also links to get the Developer tools separately:
thanks! mike
