Error when running DQSInstaller.exe

Answered Error when running DQSInstaller.exe

    Hi All,

    I'm having some issues when trying to install DQS. I have installed SQL Server developer edition onto a new VM with Windows Server 2008R2 Enterprise Service Pack 1 64 bit. I have received a all clear on the database install process and now tried to run the DQSINstaller from both the Start Menu and Command Line, I am logged in as a domain admin and have the appropriate sysadmin rights on the new database server.

    The log I am getting is decidedly unhelpful as the only error message I am getting is Script process returned unexpected exit code: '1'

    The entire log is included below.

    I have looked through a couple of other forum questions on similar topics and through the troubleshooting guide in BoL, but I don't appear to be getting as far through the process as the others that have fallen over at this point and BoL has nothing that appears to relate to my problem.

    Any and all pointers towards a resolution would be very welcome!

    Thanks in advance

    John

    decided to flatline the VM and start afresh.  :o(

    Scratch that,

    On the flatlined server I am getting to exactly the same point in the DQS install process.

    So, once again any and all suggestions gratefully received. :o(

    Just in case it is useful, my Build is 11.0.2100.60 with a CLR Build of v4.0.30319. This is Developer edition installed from a file downloaded from MSDN
    on Friday 13th.

    Just a thought,

    ... If I had backups of the DQS databases (DQS_MAIN, DQS_PROJECTS, and DQS_STAGING_DATA), and
    restored them to my server, would running the DQSInstaller.exe from the command prompt with a "-upgradedlls" switch complete the installation, or are there other objects/assemblies installed into SQL Server outside the databases that are required?

    Obviously this would also require backups with the appropriate coalition which I cannot see on Codeplex.

    Looking through the current install log, I can see that it reports extracting files to C:\Users\johnste\AppData\Local\Temp\2 but if I navigate to this location the folder is completely empty.

    Could this be causing the problem or are these files all deleted during the cleanup?

    The full text of the two install attempts this morning are...

    Now I'm REALLY confused.

    I just ran the DQSInstaller again (from the start menu), it looks identical with teh exception of a different filename at line 14 and the timestamps, but this time I do have files in C:\...\Temp\2. Same "unexpected exit code of 1" with a succesful rollback.

    I've found a couple of forum replies that suggest using process monitor to capture events from DQSInstaller.exe and cmd.exe.

    I've given that a go and in addition to a lot of SUCCESS results I am also seeing "Name not found" "Path not found" "No such file" "No more entries" "Buffer overflow" "File locked with only readers" "Reparse" "Invalid Parameter" "Not reparse point" "Is directory" and "End of file"

    The prcess that is returning a 1 exit code is DQSInstaller.exe - process exit. (see image)

    the text from the process tab is...

    This thread? http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldataqualityservices/thread/ce0e9bfa-eb36-40b7-be2a-a24665f018d1

    1. There was some command shell thing on installed on his computer called ansicon.exe which tampered with the results from the command prompt running a batch file. It would return 1 no matter which command he ran, even when Success was reported, so the caller thought it failed.

    Do you also have Ansicon, or any shell addins?

    HKCU\System\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun Reg_SZ: "c:\temp\ansi32\x64\ansicon.exe" -p

    2. Can you open the command prompt (elevated as admin) switch into your temp folder to one of the random folder names, such as this one and try to run the batch file manually:

    C:\Users\johnste\AppData\Local\Temp\2\v01snfit.rck

    Then try the batch file manually:

    recreate_schema.bat NC-DATACLEANSE DQS SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS'

    3. From your process monitor do you see sqlcmd.exe running any work?

    The batch file should run these scripts...

    recreate_schema.bat.
    --> SQLCMD -b -a32767 -S"%DQS_DB_HOST%" -d"%DQS_DB%" -isql\master_recreate.sql
    --> --> :r sql\master_create.sql
    --> --> --> :r db\static_data.sql
    --> --> --> --> [static_data.sql]
    PRINT '---[Add Special characters for term normalization]---'
    GO
    INSERT INTO [A_SPECIAL_CHARACTER_RULE] ([FROM_CHARACTER], [TO_CHARACTER]) VALUES ('''' ,'')

    I am wondering if the SQLCMD is not found, or if one of the scripts it not running.

    Use the process monitor to see if each file is picked up with success.

    False negatives are common in process monitor, so usually you will see a few NOT FOUND on the wrong folder as a process searches for a file or dll before it finds it in the right place with SUCCESS in the right folder.  That is just how windows works - searches several locations for files.

    Thanks, Jason

    Thanks for getting back to me Jason,

    1. I certainly don't have ansicon in the registry, I'm not sure how I would go about checking for "any" powershell addins, but I've looked at all the registry entries that include "Command Processor" and none of them conform to the format in your example.

    2. This directory was empty again this morning. I re-ran the installer (from start menu with elevated rights) and this placed a new copy 52fpxil3.sed into my temp/2 directory.

    Navigating into this and running the recreate_schema.bat file from the elevated command prompt appear to run the install correctly though it does not append anything to my log file; the output from the command window is...

    [A LOT further than I had managed before]  :D

    However, when I try to connect the client to the server (both on the same VM) I get an error stating that it cannot find stored procedure 'KnowledgebaseManagement.SetDataQualitySession'.

    I cannot see a KnowledgebaseManagement schema defined against any of the databases that have now been created on the server. I'm going to go through the process monitor output to see if I can see a script that failed that should have put this in place and I'll get back to you with my results.

    Thanks again

    Looking through the results of the process monitor I can see successes on master_recreate.sql and on static_data.sql, so it would appear that all the required scripts are running.

    1. It looks like the batch file ran all the scripts that it is supposed to. Make sure the process monitor shows all of those being picked up from dqsinstaller.exe {

    master_create.sql
    Running File: drop_database_properties.sql
    Running File: create_core_db_objects.sql
    Running File: static_data.sql

    }

    2. In process monitor does it show the location of SQLCMD.exe?

    Is it running the one from SQL 2012? Is it using the one from Program Files or Program Files (x86)?

    DQSInstaller allows windows to find SQLCMD from the environment PATH variable.

    What is your path? From command prompt to see it - SET PATH

    Sometimes a broken folder or order of folders in the PATH environment variable affects things. SQL 2012 (110) should be before SQL 2008 (90) or SQL 2005 (80) in the list of folders in the path string if they are installed side-by-side.

    3. Which version do you have RTM or CU2? Try installing CU2 update to see if it help. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2703275

    4. You can try to change the temp folder when you launch dqsinstaller from elevated admin prompt, just to make sure there isn't something going wrong there.

    SET TMP=C:\temp

    DQSInstaller.exe -instance MSSQLServer

    5.  A profiler trace might show us something we aren't noticing in the log output, or lack thereof.

    Knowing the last query (SQL Batch Starting/ Batch Completed) to run from the DQSInstaller would be interesting, since from the log output we don't know which step of the batch file is breaking. Which table did it create last, or which row did it insert last before the exit code 1.

    The log doesn't tell us any of those details. Its just blank...  it was after 2 seconds - which is not much of the work done. I'm not sure if it got logged in or not. Profiler would also show Audit Login / Login Failed events if you measure them.

    12/07/2012 13:13:05] Script: 'recreate_schema.bat NC-DATACLEANSE DQS SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS'

    Hi again Jason,

    1. These are only showing up under SQLCMD in process monitor, if I exclude this from the filter I don't see any of the scripts showing up.

    2. Process monitor shows sqlcmd at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn.  This is a new install on a fresh server, the only references I have to earlier editions is from the backwards compatibility.

    my path is ...

    C:\Users\johnste\AppData\Local\Temp\2\52fpxil3.sed> set path
    Path=C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32
    \WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\;C:\
    Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Micros
    oft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\T
    ools\Binn\ManagementStudio\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\

    TS\Binn\
    PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH;.MSC

    Changed the temp folder to C;\temp and I can n ow connect the client to the server!

    Thanks again.

    Was changing the TMP folder enough to fix it?

    Just wanted to make sure I understood the "fix".

    Not sure why these temp folders are not good enough :-)

    C:\Users\administrator.RMS\AppData\Local\Temp\2\
    C:\Users\johnste\AppData\Local\Temp\2\

    Thanks, Jason

    Hi Jason,

    I had also installed CU2 and to be fair I cannot recall if I tried again between doing this and changing the temp folder (It had been a long day and my concentration falls off a bit after the first 12 hours)

    The process monitor application had shut itself down and I had lost the trace which I had planned to use to verify which was the last file run, also the ...temp/2 folder had cleaned itself out and I ran the DQSInstaller from the start menu (elevated permissions) to repopulate it so I could try again from the elevated command prompt and it what this that ran through to the end.

    I had also restrated after the trace and install folder had been cleared down, even though the CU2 install did not request it, just because I'm that old!!

    If you need any more info please let me know and I'll tell you what I can, but obviously the urgency has diminished a little from my end.
