How to Uncorrupt Corrupted files?

    Question

  • I have a a few corrupted web pages masquerading as 'normal'

One of these corrupted pages is here: cannonbeachcomputers.com/dell-coupons.htm

2 manifestations of this corruption and abnormality are to do with the <lastmod>/date object:

1).. When publishing this file (frequently) EW always comes up with the  "Do you want to Overwrite this file?" dialog asking if I want to overwrite an 'older' file.

2).. Generating a sitemap.xml locally - using Dennis DeRobertis' excellent Expression Web Extra Toolbar - leaves the <lastmod> date arguments blank - and then Google crys like a baby!

So, to go deeper, one of the ways in which this - and other - pages appear to be corrupted is that the last modification date "file object" is not being read correctly - if at all.

    I have tried:

    a) "saving as" a different name and renaming back again and also,
    b)  the old hyperlink recalculation routine....

    - both to no avail.

Would anyone please have any suggestions as to:

a). what's (not) going on with these corrupted files and,
b). how to fix - without rewriting?

    Thank You.

  • copy the code view to a new page and save it with another name. Delete the first page. Rename the second page. close recalculate. close site close ew. Run Steves fpcleaner. open ew and see if its ok. This has happened a few times.. and I do it that way. Agree about Dennis' excellent app is it working in ew 2.0 now?

Funnily enough, it is working now and, the oddest anomalies happened along the way! (e.g. asking me where I wanted to save quantcast.js tracking files as an image?)

1 site worked first time and t'other site - mentioned above - took a few tries. It appears Tina that your explanation above is absolutely precise and has to be followed in that exact order - no shortcuts, assumptions or misreading allowed!

In addition, the <lastmod> dates now are filled in when running the sitemap.xml generator from the Expression Web Extra Toolbar. Or, to versa vicer it, any empty <lastmod> arguments will now show me where the remainder of my corrupted files are!

    Thank You very very much.

  • Glad to see the <lastmod> issue go away! ;-)

    Hi Tina,

The Extras Toolbar works in EW2 on Windows XP no problem and on most instances of Vista. There is an issue with EW2 using macros running on some Vista installations that crashes EW2. MS has identified the issue and stated it should be fixed with the next Vista or EW Service Pack.

  • Thanks for the update Dennis, mind if I blog that?

Are you going to be adding too or making any more addons?

    I've a wish list a mile long:)

The one of the moment being for cleaning code, you might or might know Pat Geary and I are writing a Migrating from FrontPage to Expression Web Class and Ebook for August 30th... and pushing EW to do everything it can has about reached it's limits. I'd like some macro's that can do some global jobs but, I don't know how to write macro's though I can just about come up with some expression queries. Any good links for some step by step VBA macro help? It has to be VBA apparently and nothing else for Expression Web.

I'd rather just buy some neat addons that will do global cleanups for a vareity of things:)
