Error: Internet Connection not available

    Question

  • Am getting the following message when I open Expression Web 2, "Connection error, internet connection not available". I do not want to connect remotely and can't determine why I now get this message. This seems to be related to a problem I am now having with j-moves. The edit option is disabled and that I am told only happans when a site is published and the code otimized. I am developing locally on my PC and then ftp when complete. I did not get the connection error initially and think I must have changed a setting that I don't understand. Hope this is an issue that someone can help with. I've looked at the remote server settings and passive ftp is checked, is this the problem?

  • What is your FTP URL? Switching from active FTP to passive FTP or vice versa might help, yes. It depends on your network configuration which variant works better, see <http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html>.

  • I develop websites and have dozens of sites to maintain, hosted on a variety of servers. I ftp the pages and other site elements directly using wsftp. I think there must be a setting that can be changed. Why is EW2 looking for an Internet Connection when I open the software? This was not the case initially. Help!

  • Some options come to my mind. For example, check that Help > Privacy Options... is set to No, I don't wish to participate.

You might want to install Microsoft's Fiddler tool. Start this tool, then start Expression Web, and you can easily log the HTTP traffic that xWeb causes on startup.

  • Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner ( with Expression Web and SharePoint Designer support )
Download links are at the bottom of the page.

Run the function that tells EW to *not* open the last web site.

  • Did you find a solution for this? I am having the exact same problem. FP cleaner did nothing. I know it has to do with J-Moves. When uninstalled I do NOT get this message. Once I install it again, "internet connection unavailable".

  • I have not been able to resolve this problem and can't find a help source. Its a problem, as I use J-Moves frequently and I am unable to edit any of the commands. This is very frustrating. Have you found an answer? Microsoft lists J-Moves as a valid addin but offers no help. J-Moves says its a Microsoft problem. Does EW3 help?

No, currently EW3 does not support add-ins of any kind, legacy or not. This is supposed to be remedied, to a degree, with the service pack due before year-end, but even then it will probably require some tweaking and recompiling by add-in developers. See Paul Batholomew's (EW dev team) reply in this thread.

You say that this occurs with sites for which j-moves has been used. Have you tested by creating a new local site with no j-moves component and trying to edit it? I don't use j-moves, so this is just a WAG, but is it possible that j-moves has a "call-home" routine for checking for authorized users? Like I said, just a guess, but given the symptoms...

    cheers,

    Plural's don't have apostrophe's. It seem's sometime's that any word's ending in "s" get a gratuitous apostrophe. Apostrophe's are used to indicate possessive's and elision's (contraction's or abbreviation's).

  • If you only see this problem with J-Moves, I'd say that Webs Unlimited needs to offer assistance with finding out what's wrong. Can you post a screenshot of the error message?
